We had a very successful and pleasant Bash on Saturday...many thanks to all those who drove considerable distances to attend and I hope you enjoyed the day. Unfortunately, I didn't take many pics as I was generally busy doing other things, however here's a shot of the assembled multitude at lunch, minus Benchwayze and MatthewWH who arrived shortly after:

One of the focuses (focii??) of the day was veneering and I gave a short run through for the benefit of those new to this aspect. Philly had his laptop with him and showed us some more shots of Robin  and his further adventures in the colonies...but no shots of the interesting  bar that he and the CHT guys visited

Paul C had lots of anniversary Cliftons...lots

Matthew from Workshop Heaven arrived just in time to prevent Philly from polishing off the grub and then gave us a demo on saw sharpening ( I now have a very nicely sharpened panel saw) and the Carbur burnisher for scrapers (one of those will defo be on the next order to WH)

Bob9fingers delivered the Boblock for the future purchase of my Jet 260 and let me have a couple of lengths of 12mm thick birch ply in to make one of Steve M's router table fences...again a future project, many thanks Bob.

However Benchwayze (John) brought me down a couple of lumps of what looked like fairly unpromising Douglas Fir...full of knots and splits. This shot shows the ends of the 4' long pieces:

...but I spent an hour last night cleaning it up and re-sawing it:

and lurking within were some very clean, relatively knot free (only small ones) pieces of timber, which I have a fancy to turn into a wall mounted CD/DVD rack for the lounge. Many thanks indeed John ;)

Thanks also to Pam (Mrs Newt) for the usual scrummy yummy puds, but on this occasion, Philly had to dip out...shame

Hope everyone enjoyed the day, but as usual, I was cream crackered yesterday - Rob

Hi Rob,

A smashing day was had by one and all, so you can feel cream-crackered with some satisfaction.

Pleased the timber was as nice as it looks. (Well, y'know I wooden a bought it from the guy in the first place if I'da thought it was rubbish all the way through. )

Me? I'm going to use some of the remainder for a wall-rack, (like the one I saw in your workshopl) for my tobacco tins, of which I have a enough to supply a Roman legion!

Thanks again..

John
:D

Excellent day, as always, Rob. Not all the Anniversary Cliftons were mine  - most were paulm's :) I was just the delivery man.....

It was good to meet up again, and to see your Alan Peters-style media unit. It looks great.

Cheers

Doh, I missed it :( Ah well, good excuse for a re-visit ;)

Thanks for hosting again Rob, an enjoyable day out as always and a great bunch of people, some of whom had come a considerable distance to be there which just goes to show how much people value the chance to get together for things like that.

If I was a bit quiet on the day itself it was only because I had a horsefly bite on my foot the evening before and it was really massively swollen and sore.

I had swallowed a few antihistamine tablets to try and bring the swelling down, but despite what it says on the packet they do actually make you very, very drowsy !

It was all I could do to stay awake, particularly after lunch when I nearly fell asleep at the table

The new Cliffies are lovely and needless to say I couldn't wait to have a play with them on Sunday, so all honed and made a pile of shavings already, no collectors here

Only thing is the blades on the 41/2 and 51/2 are wider than my dmt stones and I can't use the eclipse jig obviously while running the blades sideways along the stones so made do as best I could. Could always revert to the waterstones I guess which are still lurking somewhere and which I think should be wide enough.

Thanks very much Rob, and Pete and Pam, for the food and hospitality, and great to meet up with everyone again.

Cheers, Paul :D

Yes an excellent day out - great company and great food.

The floor was heaving with Cliftons!

Thanks Rob (and Pam for the lovely cakes).

Paul - perhaps a Kell would work, the normal angles require very short overhangs?
