Can anyone suggest an alternative for a chipbreaker screw frow a LN number 4?
I have managed to misplace mine and need to find another.

Write LN in the USA and ask them what the pitch and size of their chipbreaker screw is and tell them you've lost yours.

I can almost guarantee they will at the very least tell you exactly what you need to know to buy a custom screw, if they don't outright figure out how to get you another one.

I have sent them an email. If I were to buy it from them directly it would end up costing around $120, the screw is $5.
It will still be difficult to find an imperial screw in italy.

Sorry, I thought you were in the UK. If you have a way to get something over here (in the states) inexpensively and the problem is mailing or service, let me know.

Even in the states, if I were to order a screw from them, they'd probably charge $13 or something to ship it.

There have been cases in the past where I've needed replacement bits for tools used (quite often just boxes) and they sent them and refused any payment even though I voiced that giving me free stuff when I wasn't the customer was a bit unreasonable, I would prefer to pay them. I no longer have any of those planes, though, and I don't think I have a spare chipbreaker floating around to test older infill screws that might match. Otherwise, I'd just send you one of those.

oh my...the chipbreakers themselves are up to $50 here now. Fairly sure the last one that I bought to be able to use thin irons in a LN plane without slacking the adjuster with the stock iron was somewhere more like $30.

I just checked. $12 for them to ship the screw in the US, which is pretty idiotic. the actual cost of first class postage is about $4 for something like that, but they aren't set up to send anything first class.

I looked up the USPS schedule - I can be your last resort if you don't find anything else but the $5 screw will end up being the following plus 7% tax:
$5 for the screw
$11.45 for shipping maine to me in the US
$17 international first class shipping

That's about $34-$35 for a screw. Princely sum, but not $120.

I suggest you amend the title of this post to include reference to the LN4 plane. This may catch the attention of LN owners who might be able give details of the screw.
Just a thought

Agree, if a plane then from experience unique threads. Cast, usually coarse and usually imperial. UNF and UNC american

They'll be machined from LN. LN doesn't do a whole lot the old way, and as far as I know, they don't cast anything in house. Maybe bronze, but the iron bodies are cast elsewhere, the heat treating is done by a contractor and they pretty much specialize in machining, CNC, assembly and some hand finishing.

I wouldn't be surprised if they copied stanley thread pitch, but the screws are longer due to the thicker irons.

The extra cost is tax at 22% on the item and the shipping cost, $20 for the courier to calculate the tax, or $10 if it is delivered by the post. They usually round up significantly as well.

Just change shipping destination!

I've just checked the screws and chipbreakers from my Clifton 5.1/2, Record 4 and LN8 blade (fitted to a Stanley8). Guess what, they're all interchangeable for thread if not length.
So @Peter Sefton 's offer looks a good shout.
Brian

PS Buy one and the old one will miraculously appear
Many thanks
