Does anyone out there own/tried the LN Mortise Chisels, they seem rather expensive but opinions would be appreciated.

Funnily enough, one popped through my door yesterday. First impressions are-perfectly constructed, cuts through timber like a hot knife, worth the money.
I'll spend more time chopping this weekend and report back.
But yes, I like! :D
Philly :D

Only 1 popped through your door, tut tut.

As I trust your judgement I'll have to place an order or two or three

P'shaw. Get yourself a real mortise chisel - you're in the land of the oval bolstered, chum. You know, the ones all the 'Murricans get excited about.

Cheers, Alf

Well, while I have always wanted some in decent shape, the ones on the top of the list have been Barr chisels.

But, then again, its just a want. I'll just have to keep using my Sorby sash mortise chisels...and they have been ok.

Take care, Mike

Do you mean that the LN's are inferior?

Nope. But the OVBs may be superior. The front to back dimensions are greater and that's half the road to an accurate mortise. I wouldn't swap mine for LNs and you know I'm no slouch when it comes to lusting after the goodies from Maine. But as Mike says, even a Sorby sash chisel will do the job, but then Mike has a certain amount of skill and experience to help him. :)

Cheers, Alf

And just to clarify...the Sorbys may meet my needs, but minimally. They are not even close to being in the same league as LN, those great oval bolstered, nor obviously the Barrs.

If money is a concern, which it was when I bought mine *and* the scale/requirement of the work supports such a lightweight chisel, they are fine. Anything requiring larger work or simply heavier bashing and I'm afraid the handle would be the first to go--and I would end up with wonky mortises.

Take care, Mike

Will someone please decode this talk of Oval Bolsters for the slower ones among us? :?

They'd probably look more like this from anywhere else:

For some reason I was moved to sell my spares for a pittance and I'm still not sure why... #-o

I "just happened to be in Pennyfarthing Tools" on Thursday and they had a box of pigstickers going for about £6 a piece. They needed a lot of flattening/restoring but they certainly are a BIG chisel. Always handy when mortising.....
The Lie-nielsens are not so massively built but still pretty darn solid. And they are truly built to perfection. Now you know I like tools, and I have bought the odd item from most manufacturers out there. There aren't many that build their tools to such high (read perfect) standards. Not many affordable(ish) tools have their backs hand lapped.
Yes, a simple chisel has got Philly all emotional
Philly :D

More thought food - see Alf's picture - a couple of those chisels have rounded bevels which is what you want in a mortice chisel like these - not a straight bevel, the rounded bevel makes getting the chips out much easier!

Very interesting comments on mortise chisels, thanks all.

The bottom line is (call me a fool if you wish) I have gone for the LN's, I've got to try them and if they don't do what it says on the box, there's always e-bay.
