Little Present for neighbour - some coasters

A while ago I was jointing these strips of hardwood just as practice / attempt at future chessboard etc but then forgot about it.


Then I found it, chopped it up into squares and felt it looked like it could be a bunch of coasters. As our neighbour is kindly letting us charge the new car at theirs until we get a doofer fitted I thought I'd make them something.



So planed them up a bit more (should have done this before I chopped it up but I wasn't thinking).

Picked an arbitrary angle which I hoped would allow the future baseplate to be balanced. Have sapele and cut out a rebate for future baseplate.


Cut out the rebates / grooves / trenches ? In hindsight again I should have taken more care over standardising the individual coasters thickness.....


But it works out ok after lots and lots of sanding and delicate planing. Sanded to 360g for the stand and 120g for the coasters.



First and second coats of danish oil



Then assembly. Dowel up from base into the rebates rack part, glued. Really enjoyed this one taking shape.

Almost a shame to put hot mugs on to these coasters..nicely done

They look fab and I like the stand and nice detail on it where you have relieved the hard edges!
I have lots of small sapele and maple offcuts and your present has given me inspiration to put them to good use!!
