S&S - thanks for confirming on the Chinese makers, I thought as much - JCB make a big nationalistic play on how British they are (fair enough for many of their diggers etc) but then use their branding to import all sorts of tools, clothing etc.

Bit like the Ineos guy with his UKIP/Brexit line now making his Landrover replacement in France. Or Dyson moving to Singapore. -- the list goes on

ie -- it's just how can I make the most money in the end.

How about Paramo? I have one of their replaceable blade planes that now uses Record blades. It was one of the first woodworking tools that I bought. Not sure if they are British though or what other tools they made.

I too thought they manufactured some of their machinery in the UK.

I would be very surprised if the JCB bandsaw was Chinese, as it is at least 50 years old, and as China was at the height of the cultural revolution at the time and couldn't even feed themselves. These machines were made before the company made earth moving equipment.

Yes, I think it's most likely that they were just an early production of the firm. Nothing to do with branding exercises.
