Well it arrived yesterday in a big old wooden box and I must admit i'm very impressed. The first LN plane I have purchased, but as no one else makes a no.51 and i had a bit of Xmas money to put towards it I dived in. The construction is bang on, lovely engineering and well finished as you would expect. I know some will say not worth it for a single use plane, but life is short and damn it a little bit of tool **** isnt going to kill me, lol.
Next job is to make a no.52 board, all the materials are on order and I've done a drawing for my friendly local engineering workshop. I'll keep you all updated if anyone is interested in the progress of the no.52.

I hope you enjoy using it. Ive had mine for 4 years and it is truly a masterpiece. I never worry about mitres etc now - that are all spot on and perfect. I made my own shooting board using the LN plans - fully intending to get a 52 shooting board if and when LN made one - or even like you to get my local angineering shop to help me make one - but then I saw the Veritas shooting board track - the lone one (600mm) is about £45 from Axi - and that has complemented it so well that I am sorted. Just thought I would give you my experience

I can supply more photos of the #52 if you need.

Good luck and keep us up to date.

Hi Derek, thanks for the pics. I found your very interesting "Shooting planes compared" and your "The #51 Shooting Plane: Stanley and Lie-Nielsen" posts online. An amazingly indepth bit of writing. I used both to help in my drawing of my slightly modified no.52. Lots useful photos and information. Many thanks for taking the time to write it all.

You've very welcome. Yell out if you need any info.

Incidentally, I recall that Jim Kingshott built a #52, and there are plans in his book, "Making and modifying woodworking tools".
