Very subtle but I think I found it!

The left is framed (well at least has styles), the right looks frameless.

I like frames so my vote is left :)

Thanks guys - left it is

so next question is how to fit the 18mm panels (that's the size they come in) to the 30mm stile without weakening the stile too much

I was going to do a rebate in the stile and stick the panel in but that was when I thought I could get a 12mm panel - at 18mm the rebates are too close to each other on the back stiles as that one has two rebates (one for the side and one for the back) I could use a thinner ply panel for the back but that doesn't 'feel' right.

anyway no Domino's or biscuits available - table saw and router and small joint genie only.

The panels are the 18mm by 600 by 2400 laminated pine boards - not ply

I tell you what - why don't you just build it for me and save me the trouble? only kidding!!

Pete

You could just biscuit-joint the panels to the stiles; I don't see a problem with that, as you have a table saw to cut them parallel. If you have a router then you can cut the slots with a 4mm~3/16" slot cutter. All you'd need then is a bag of biscuits (or, you could rout continuous grooves and fit a thin spline - say, 6mm ply or similar).

My other suggestion would be to rebate both edges of the panels to create a tongue that would fit in to a groove in the stiles. Hope that makes sense. :)

I used a domino for mine, but I had a bottom rail, and left the panel floating.

Do you have a drill and a nearby focus/B&Q? Drill some dowels holes and attach it that way.

Use the router to take the back corner away from the panel, leaving a long tongue, say 6mm square. Again use the router to run a 6mm x 6mm groove the length of the stile, Glue panel to stile. Job done.

Thanks everyone - i'm going to use all those ideas

basically make the panels thinner at the edge and carry on as previously planned - and I suppose it might make the glue area bigger as the bit outside the rebate would butt up to the edge of the stile.

and I'll use the dowels for the kick board bit at the front

now I just need to re-read the bit about posting photo's and i'll be able to show you what it comes out like!

Many thanks again

Photo's are dead easy, just take your link you get from photobucket and stick it in the space below, including the full link...

Below is the correct syntax for your picture

All you need to do is remove the space immediately after the first [ img] tag and you are away.
