Does anyone have any experience or know of any reviews of Lee Valley's chisels? They have some quite juicy looking ones in their on line catalogue here: http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page....isers speak very highly of them.) Thanks Bill

Bill

I have a set of LV bevel edged chisels, the ones with the yellow handles. Had them for about 8 years and find them very good, hold the edge and very comfortable to use, as a general chisels |I don't think you could go wrong with these.

Hi Waka.

Do the LV chisels bevels go down to the chisel face, creating an angle, Or, has the chisel got an edge side before the bevel?

I hope you understand that.

What I am trying to discover is what manufacturers make chisels that go right into the corners of dovetails. So that one can clean out the corners properly.

I know from seeing Tony's LN chisels that they make them. Are there any others?

Sorry Bill. I didn't mean to got his far off track.

Unless your DT is exactly the width of your chisel, you can come at the corner of the DT "on an angle" to manage with a knife edge bevel.

Yeah. Alfs!

Hi Gary,

There are flats on the sides. I would call them something like bevel edge firmers.

Aside from TLN's, there are Japanese DT chisels as well as those from Blue Spruce:

Steel is great. Workmanship wonderful.

Take care, Mike

LN and BS chisels are nice,
But it's also quite easy to grind some old serviceable chisels and turn them into custom DT chisels.

Bill, I tried the URL you posted but I only see the entire range of chisels LV offers...which ones are you referrring to?

Hi Frank--yep, I've ground many a chisel for getting into corners. Best thing I have used in the past, though, was a fishtail carving chisel. Reasonable in cost.

The steel in the Blue Spruce is tops, though. Glad I bought it.

Take care, Mike

Thinking about it, the fact we so rarely hear people complaining that they cut themselves on the bevelled edge of their chisels is quite revealing. It was problem enough that the Woodworker published (twice, iirc) a tip to grind down just the first inch or so of a square-sided firmer to create a bevel-edged chisel that was comfortable to grasp round the blade. Maybe modern manufacturers are just trying to protect us from hurting ourselves? :-k

Cheers, Alf
