I currently have an Axminster AWVSL1000, had it for about 18 months or so and it's been very good..... as a starter lathe.

Now that i've become a little more proficient :? and have found my 'niche', as in boxs & pens etc, i'm thinking about upgrading to a better quality machine, and am looking at the small Jet series lathes, namely the 1220 & the 1220VS.

Any thoughts or comments would be most welcomed...... or even other machines that i've missed/over looked maybe..??

Cheers all......

I have the Jet mini (and I think George recently got one for pens as well). I foubnd it to be a well made, little lathe and used it a lot for about a year before getting another larger one. Size of things you can make is really it's only limitation. If you can, I'd advise going for the VS as the only complaint I have with the other is perhaps the speed change is a bit of a pain but apart from that I'd happily recommend it. I think the VS has a more powerful motor as well though that may not be a consideration for pens and boxes.
