I made my own dust extractor using a bouncy castle pump (a home use one) and tumble dryer vent tube, it worked well to begin with but has lost suction quickly. I used it to extract the dust in the air but also used an attached tube to 'vacuum' up some larger pieces (shavings, small chips etc...).

Do you have any advice for making my own or dust extractors that I can buy ready made to install in my shed?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Not sure how you make a dust extractor out of a pump but you have obviously succeeded.

Loss of suction is normally down to filters clogging, which includes the dust catchment device.

Another type of separator is a Thien baffle. This type of device is often sold as an ashcan separator so that you can vacuum (cold) ash from the fire using a domestic vacuum cleaner. Most wood workers make their own.
