hi, ive been looking everywhere to find a chuck to fit my lathe the spindle thread is 8tpi but it has a 3/4'' diameter which i can find anywhere, ive checked nova chucks they seem to havea 8pti but none with a 3/4 inch diameter. does anybody know of a chuck that might fit or am i just wasting my time. thanks

Im not sure i bought it off ebay, its a floor standing lathe with a heavy duty cast iron base and a girder type bed. its got a gryphon motor on it. it does has a 1''x8tpi but the drive centre has a 3/4 inch diameter. ive checked for all adapters i could find and have had no luck. think i might need to invest in a more expensive lathe[/img]

mmm - if its 1 x8tpi then thats the size chuck thread you need ( the axminster and toolpost chucks can all be colleted to 1x8tpi) the diameter of the drive centre is irrelevant as the chuck doesnt go on the morse taper (unless its a jacobs chuck) it screws on the outside of the spindle.

Hi Dean

Big Soft Moose has it right. Your spindle thread is 1" x 8TPI and you can get adaptors for a chuck with this thread size. You will also need to discover what size of Morse taper you need, for accessories like a drive centre etc. These are commonly 1Mt or 2MT, 2 being bigger than 1. Have a look at http://www.woodturners.org/tech_tips/mo ... _sizes.htm for more information

Good luck

Sounds to me like you are mistaking the spindle thread size (1" x 8tpi) with the morse taper spindle aperture (which might well be MT2). Some local turner might well be able to pop round and try some for you..... whereabouts are you - updating the profile with location helps.
