Hi

Would like to show off my latest project. Got the plan from Paul Richardson's book, Making Classic English Furniture.

Table.jpg

It's the first real bit of fueniture I have made and the first hand cut dovetails I have made. The drawers are oak lined with Mahogany fronts. A mahogany curl veneer is on the top and drawer fronts. Although it doesn't show very well. The top is crossbaned in Satin wood with a 1.5mm boxwood and 1.5mm Ebony strip between the mahogany and Satin wood. The edges of the drawers and legs have the Boxwood strip. The top is made of MDF, but I wish I had used ply. I had to dampen and press the curl before I could lay it. I don't think it was dry enough, because although I put a backing veneer on the top, the top has developed a very slight bow. If it gets any worse I will have to make the top.

Added 14:10hrs Saturday 27th.
Thanks for all your compliments. My head is so big now I don't think I will get back into my workshop!

In answer to:-
Alf. It took about two months working evenings and weekends.
Lord Nibbo. I am a newby, not sure what a Furniture thread is?
Waterhead37 The top veneer is only .06mm not 1.5mm (didn't know you could get it that thick). I flattened the curl in a press sandwitched with paper towels. But even though I changed them three times and left it 24 hours, I think I should have given it mor time.
Woodbloke. The top veneer was balanced with one underneath. But it didn't need flattening so was drier.
Shivers. I used PVA on the top veneer and an iron on glue for the backing veneer.

Thanks again all.

Very nice. I like the boxwood trim around the drawers - Looks like you got a nice finish on there too. Initially I thought the the drawer handles looked a bit big, but I think it's just because they're so shiny and new at the moment. Once the've had a bit of use, they'll probably darken a little and not draw the eye so much. (or maybe that's just the photo)

Good work sawdust maker :D

Hi

I like what you've done, you must be feeling very pleased and with good reason, look forward to your next project.

Cheers Alan

That is a very fine job for a "first real" one and it is nice to see such a classic piece. Congratulations.

I find curl veneers can be very difficult to get flat, especially if you are using a thick one. I found 1.5mm mahogany veneers very tough and scrapped several leaves/substrates whilst making up panels with them because I used them before they were dry (and I was using a vacuum press).

IIRC Paul Richardson talks about keeping stuff flat (even without a balancing veneer) using newspaper during the drying process?

Very nice work =D>

You have proved that you don't now need to follow a plan.

For your next project - design your own. It's even more fun!

Cheers
Brad

Beautiful, It looks better than any of the 5 featured in the interesting furniture thread.

Congratulations on a stunning piece of work.

Phil

That's a lovely piece SDP. Do you have any WIP photos? And how about some piccies of the drawers and the underside of the table?

If I had made that I'd be chuffed to bits! I hope you feel inspired to make some more. Not heard of the Richardson book. How do you rate it?

Lovely piece of work - Paul Richardson's book is a good one IMO

I don't think it was dry enough, because although I put a backing veneer on the top
Did you put a counter balancing veneer on the underside of the top?....if not then this may be the reason that the top has a slight bow as the surface veneer shrinks slightly - Rob

Well done --nice job, what kind of glue were you using for the top? & what methods to glue the veneer down.
