Lap tops and Broadband?

I have a friend who wants to buy their first ever computer and they would prefer a lap top so they can use it on their boat.

I would suggest they buy a Dell and a dongle to hook up to internet broadband but what is the best roaming ISP considering they will only use the lap top on their boat for about four months a year? My suggestion is they go for a pay as you go, maybe with Vodafone, or should I suggest they go on a contract?

I have the 3 mobile dongle on a contract at £10 month, it works really well even when I am in SW Ireland which is as far west in europe that you can get and surrounded by mountains.

For a short period a PAYG might be better.

Thanks Paul, I see 3mobile comes second in a poll for best mobile broadband provider HERE Although they a internet virgins, that must be rarer than female virgins :lol: I suspect they will end up using it more and more. They do have a mobile phone on contract, so it might be a benefit going with who they already have that contract with. At this moment they only want it to down load weather forecasts but using the net is another slope aint it?

My dad got his at his local '3' mobile phone shop in Bangor. I've just noticed however, that the small independent computer shop near where I live is offering a similar deal - free Toshiba laptop if you sign up for '3' broadband.

It must be a widely available offer.

It's got to be worth it just for the laptop, maybe you have to have their most expensive package £30 over 2 Years.

Yeah, just had a look, its not FREE is it, well not in my book, thought it was too good to be true.

but you've then paid for a laptop and had free broadband for 18 months ?
or paid for broadband for 18 months and had a free laptop ?

No not at all. A lot of broad band suppliers are priced at about £10, most of the deals with the laptops are £20- £30 so you are paying for both.

Hopefully this is relevant and not a hijack of the thread, as PAYG mobile broadband has been mentioned..

I'm looking into this for the odd occassion when I'm away from the office, the problem for me (and it doesn't seem to be made clear) is that a lot of the PAYG deals give you a voucher/top up but it has to be used up within 30 days of activation or you lose any remaining 'credit'.
So, if you only use it two days a month it's not so convenient.

The only exception I can find is the Vodafone one which doesn't seem to expire, you pay for what you use, when you use it.

I'm happy to be corrected on this or to hear an opposing view...
