Wondered why there was a marked lack of traffic in the lane, think the decision not to bother with the supermarket today was a good idea.
Just seen these on local paper site.

And no I don't think it's funny that the drift up the front door is deeper than when I shifted it this morning.

Living in suburban Bristol, on a road that leads between two major roads, the gritters were out every day and our road has remained passable. However, due to problems elsewhere, the lack of traffic, which is never very great at the worst of times, was quite noticeable. What was much more noticeable was the number of people going out for a walk. We usually get the occasional passer by on their way to the local shops but yesterday was just like Christmas with couples and families all out for a stroll. With schools and and offices being shut, it was like the afternoon of Christmas Day when everyone goes out for a stroll after lunch. What made it more so was the number of dads pulling their children on sleds which has been a rare sight in recent years.

It's starting to thaw now so we are probably destined for a few days of ice and slush.

The strong swirling winds and drifts are the problem here, actual snow fall low and roadway clear down to the tarmac in places but in the hollows and around bends it's too deep to walk through without a struggle, trouble is without a blower there's nowhere for basic snow plough to push the stuff in the narrow lanes, needs a front loader to lift and dump. A warmer weekend will be the most effective.

What’s that yellow thing in the OP's 2nd photograph?

This time 2 years ago I was working in Ottawa, every other truck had a blade attached it it. Feet of snow everywhere but all the roads and car parks were clear. Unfortunately in this country snow is so rare it’s easier to cope with a week's inconvenience than invest in the infrastructure to deal with it.

We worked yesterday with a reduced number of staff and students after I cleared the drive and paths. Our mail roads were passable but we had more snow overnight and I am not planning on leaving the house now until Monday or the thaw.

Stay safe, cheers Peter

I’m sorry, but that’s a bit pathetic - or just an excuse for a snow day? Your workshop is all of 10,maybe 15 meters away from your house :) :) :)

Only 8c, can beat that by about 10 higher. Only problem is we've had 2 tornadoes in the last few days which have passed about half a mile either side of us. Wonder if we should make a sacrifice to Aeolus but not many virgins around these days so maybe a goat will suffice. https://algarvedailynews.com/news/13757 ... he-algarve

where do you find a virgin goat?

Netflix, apparently...

Failing that, get one off your local Viking crew. The Norse lot seem to have far cooler gods anyway, who don't really care if your sacrifice is a virgin or not...!

Doesn't look that bad does it.
A little snow that's blown around a bit.
Not very far north of us they have between one and a half and two metres of snow. Normally they have colder weather which means less snow. It's very obvios that the climate is getting warmer.

This is the only reasonably normal winter we have had in 6 or 7 years down here but it got started almost a month later than normal.
I took this photo yesterday from my car when driving homewards along an ice road some 20 kilometres offshore on sea ice. The first time since 2013 that the sea ice has been good enough to allow for any ice roads.

Well it's a nice sunny morning and all but a smidgen of snow left so let's go for a walk around the local valley and woodland.
Better go down the the bottom and climb back up through the woodland to the next village, that will leave us with the gentle walk back along reasonably level route via Pig lane.
2 hrs later after a very pleasant if somewhat strenuous walk after the cold weather break and about 1KM away we turn into the final leg:-
What the:!!
PL1.jpg

Ahh well it should only be over the exposed ridge.
There, told you it wasn't much, at least we can see the house roof in the distance now, another 10 mins. and we can have a Latte.
PL2.jpg

You were saying!!!
PL3.jpg

The sensible thing would be to go back and around the road, I duno that's going to be another 3km. or so, you can walk on top of most of it, it's only the odd time when it collapses and you end up to your thighs in the stuff.
PL4.jpg

No going back now, only about 200mtrs to go.
PL5.jpg

So much for the relaxed final leg, should know better at our age.
At least we now know why we could see a snow drift at the top of the back field.
