Hi

I made a Zebrano knife block (and a couple of coffee and tea caddies - check the thin rebates new the top) some time back and am posting here in repsonse to a recent qustion about making them.

I really made it as I bought some new Japanese knives, but also because I like making curved things

Pictures tell the story  Final shaping was with block plane and compass plane

Enjoy!!

That's nice, good shape, lovely colour.

I don't normally like Zebrano - it can be a bit brash, but that's a good look.

What's the finish?

Thanks Jake

Finish is Polyx oil (seem to use it all the time lately)

The zebrano was much 'browner' than usual and the contrasting colours much closer. Very nice board

this could be a daft question but how did you stop glue getting into the slots? I think I can spot some glue squeezed out of the top (oh please let it be so - such that I don't feel a total clutz when gluing!)?

Many thanks

Miles

Tony - nice, like it. Like someone else said, I don't normally like the Z wood but in small project like this it looks very good...cunning way you got round the sapwood
But again, how did you ensure that there was no glue squeeze out in the slots? - Rob

Fair question :D

I cut some small splines and glued them in the bottom of each slot to help loaction and applied loads of glue (that is what you see squeezing out). The rest of the glue was applied quite thinly using a brush which resulted in no visibloe squeeze out and none were blocked.

By the way, each slot is cut to a different depth to suit the knife blade width

Very nice, what's on the cards now?

Well, there is the american cherry cabinet I just finished, inspired by Philly and Rob (woodbloke) and using Krenov-style door catches and handles.........

And there he goes rushing to his workshop to make a start

Nice work, Tony. A good-looking piece of timber and I really like the shape of the knife block. :)

Hi Tony, can I ask you if you lined the caddies with anything, I have been trying to source some type of lining to make some myself or do you think its perfectly ok just to use a food safe oil?
