I have been asked to make a rather large knife block in bamboo..... not my idea I have to stress. She wants it to take 22 knives so it will be huge
Has anyone done this? I can't quite work out how to cut the slots for the knives. I presume it must be done as a 'shell' - ie make the 'inside' first, with rebated pieces of hardwood glued together 'around' the knife slots, then covered with a thin layer of hardwood (in this case bamboo) and a thinnish layer of end-grain for the top. Does that sound right?
Thanks for any ideas

This is a really cool idea:

Ties in well with the bamboo theme too

The knife block we have is made up of strips. One face is flat and the other has rebates wide enough for each knife. All glued together with a final plain strip. If you make an angled block put the knives in with the cutting edge facing away from you, this stops the blade cutting the timber when knives are replaced in the slots.

Thanks both of you - I will go the way you describe shultzy
btw how's your C26? Are the problems you had with it sorted? Mine is now fantastic since I got a 250mm 1.6mm thin kerf CMT blade, made myself a riving knife the same thickness, took off that big squaring frame and put a big old mitre fence on the sliding table - it is now so accurate for smaller work

Gasman, its ok, although I still have the problem of the planer motor overheating. I have to ring Record again, I believe i might need a transformer to cure it.

If you take a block of tomber, could be laminated, sized more than the largest blade, cut slots of differing depths on the table saw, glue another piece to close the slots, and affix a base, that should do it,it is the way I made a couple once.
Derek.
