Kitchen units with face frames

Just trying to work out when you use butt hinges on faceframed Kitchen units do you let the hinge into the door and the face frame or only into the door so as to give you a bit of a gap?

A friend of mine recommended to only let the hinge into the door.

Depends on the thickness of the hinge and gap in the middle of the hinge. I usually aim for a 2mm gap, and think they look better set in on both

I usually just let the hinge into the door so that it leaves a 1mm or so gap on the hinge side.

I used to do pretty much all my kitchens on butts but these days i normally use soft close concealed hinges unless someone speciffically asks for them.

Jon what size hinges did you use and where did you used to buy them?

It looks like you set the hinge a bit deeper on the door than the leaf thickness.

The hinges I use are 2 1/2 inch and i usually get them from a company called fixfirm fittings but they havent got a website.

If you are only cutting in the door you have to cut it in deeper than the leaf of the hinge if the hinge is 6mm you cut in the door 4.5mm for a 1.5mm gap.

Jon, I like the way you arris the hinge rebate, have you set up a jig with beading cutter?

If you cur the hinge into the door only (and I usually do that, too) then hanging the door becomes a little more tricky as you have nothing into which you can locate the hinge, so it is easy to get the hinge a bit off and the door looks bad.

I get round this by using a little piece of thin MDF, routed to a squareish C-shape, so that the leaf of the hinge just fits in the C snugly.

When the position of the hinge is marked on the frame, tape the C in position. You then have a recess into which you can locate the hinge. They will all be right and all be the same.

If you get hinges with the same size Knuckle as your cockbead, they can look good just set into the cockbead

Hi Simon I usually just carve them a bit with a chisel and finish with a bit of sandpaper.
