Turning MDF into gold in a northern town
I just finished fitting a kitchen today that I've been working on for the last month or so.

I'm now waiting for the granite worktops to be fitted before I go back and do all the finishing touches - and take some proper photos.

It's basically all veneered MDF with 20mm and 30mm solid walnut lippings. There's nothing like a job like this to hone your lipping trimming skills. I had to do literally hundreds and I never went through a bit of veneer once!

Very nice Dan - bet that set them back a fair bit.....

Do you do your own tiling work etc?

Cheers

Nice looking job Dan, just finished stripping out a large kitchen job myself, hope to have it all done by end of November.

Can I ask the details of the handles as my client wants something similar.

No, I just supplied and fitted the cabinets. The client organised all the building work etc.

The cabinets came to just under ten grand. :D

The handles were from Hettich. I can't remember the name but I'm sure you've got a catalogue.

Great looking job, what granite are they having ?

I don't know! I'll post some pictures when its fitted.

I'm liking that corner drawer, did you have any problems making it?

There's actually a set of three corner drawers. Making the carcass and the drawer boxes was very straightforward; fitting the fronts however, was a real pig!

I'll not be suggesting that solution again in a hurry!

Lovely work Dan, well done.

Not my favourite timber, looks-wise, but this does look smart here. Do you do your own design work? What finish does this have?

Mike

Very nice there!

Hope you don't mind the noob question but here goes :) - you said that this is veneered MDF, are you applying the veneer yourself or is that how you buy it (all ready in place - so to speak).

When you talk about 'lipping' - erm - what is lipping?

Cheers.

Very nice looking job. What finish do you use and is it the same finish on the inside of the cabinets as the outside?

Mike

The client had picked some ideas from that '25 Beautiful Kitchens' magazine and we cobbled it together from there.

It's all finished in 20% sheen acid-catylist lacquer - sprayed.

Veneered MDF is bought in 8'x4' sheets ready-veneered both sides with the wood veneer of your choice. It is a mass-produced product churned out in huge factories.

Lipping in simply a strip of solid wood glued onto the edge of the veneered board and then trimmed flush with the surface of the board so that you can't see the join.

I make my cabinets from the same veneered MDF and spray finish the componants before assembly. In my opiniion it's a lot classier than using melamine faced chipboard

Thanks for all the nice comments. New project starts today!

Cool!

I guess it being MDF doesn't suffer from as much movement as (for want of a better phrase!) 'normal' wood.

How thick typical is the veneers on the MDF?

Cheers
Wayne.

The veneer is about 0.6mm thick on the commercial boards, probably a bit less once it is sanded.

Dan you're a superstar. Can I be your groupie? 8)

Which is why trimming the lippings flush with the surface of the board can be such a tricky job. A random orbital sander will sand right through the veneer if you're not very careful.

I do small pieces with a rebate block on the spindle moulder; larger pieces such as the larder cupboard doors and the panel on the peninsular were done by hand with a router. I'll stick a 'how to' on the Jigs & Tips section if anyone's interested.

particularly given your signiture!

Probably right Dan, don't invite me to help you ever, I could put you out of business

I had a big job to do that required a lot of lipping so i added the cost of one of these onto the bill

http://shop.johnlloydfinefurniture.co.u ... f/page.htm

Works brilliantly and is really quick. It was schocked by how much they are now I paid a little over £500 for it a few years ago. Used to have to do it before getting the lamello either with router or hand plane.

Nice kitchen by the way Dan.
