Contrary to usual I only grabbed a few photos off this as I made it in a day and installed it yesterday.

I used standard big bolts as per forum advice and hid the holes by veneering once in place. It will be in its home for a few years so when it comes time to move I'll have to remove to faces of veneer to get it apart. I've still got to cap the end feet to protect that top veneered edge.

The headboard is a torsion box of 6mm MDF outter and a 12mm inner covered with a double fold of very thick padding and then upholstered.

Total cost is for the bed was £100 plus £60 for the slats from Ikea.

Thanks for reading!

One with the matress in, sorry its so blurry I must have shaken!

Chems - in photo 2, can you just undo the nut\s that can be seen and dismantle the bed? I'm a little bit confused by the bit when you say you veneered over the holes\bolts and would have to remove the veneer later to dismantle the bed.

Cheers

The nuts won't turn in the holes, not the ones in the 18mm stuff, so the bolt has to be turned, which is now covered by the veneer. Clearer?

Sounds like a good price for a bed.

Are those "big bolts" any different to coach bolts?

Could you not have made the nut recesses longer, so that you could get a ratchet/socket spanner in there, over the end of the nut?

Like this:

Or, you could have chopped out a recess for a hex-headed bolt, so that it couldn't turn.

Or, have I mis-understood?

I could have done all those things, although making anything like that in 18mm side bits would have been really difficult! The ones that are in the thick stock you can turn the nut on those, loads of space in there.

It was a speed build, no finesse a get it done one!
