Hello
I have just posted some turning pictures from one of my classes into the woodturning page and thought I should share some stuff here as well.
These are from my year 10 and 11 classes.
Give you an idea of some of the projects we do at the moment.

My design / year 11 work / On the course we do students don't have to design the project they make, which in some cases is a very good thing

Remind me again how old year 10/11 kids are. When I left school it went up to 5 and then A-levels...

Never mind being made by a school-kid, I would be happy with that table in my living room. I just really like the chunky feel of it.

Instead of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, A levels

It is 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13. I think it is to be more American. When the kids start the the school system and 5 years old they join year 1.

So your 10 and 11 kids are doing the GCSE courses, they must be 15/16.

Thanks for your nice comments about the table. That has been a very popular design for me, I have made quite a few of them.

Thnaks for posting that lot,Rich - it's nice to see that some kids are still alllowed to actually do woodwork (my son had the option of "resistant materials",which involved spending an awful lot of time designing and making a CD case...but no woodwork :( )

And there's some nice ideas in there, the chunky table looks great :D

That is excellent work for year 10/11 kids.
When I taught that age group they were just given a project to make, all the same and pretty tedious for them and me.

The imagination and design ideas in those photos are really good and extends their ability far more then a set project or test piece.

harsh as ever Aidan ;)

I remember my technology dept at school and very similar work was on display along the corridors. Only occasionally did I see one of the 'big kids' making something that I deemed 'cool'. I think it's mainly down to the student's vision. I had no idea about good design when I was 14. IIRC there was a boy in the year above me who's Dad was a guitar maker... guess who came top of the class.... ?

I was just thinking the opposite!

I guess you haven't worked with the range of Year 10/11 kids I have then.
Some of the ones I've had think they have done a great job when a single lap dovetail fits any way round in the socket and refuse to see the point of squares and rulers. I had one who clamped a bit of wood to the bench top and chiselled a mortise half way through the bench before I got to him to stop him.

Thanks for posting those photos, the happy days of school came flooding back! :D

I used to really love woodwork when at school, and the teacher was great. You dare not speak unless spoken to and the first lesson taught, was that "accidents don't happen, they are caused" That one statement has stayed with me some 27yrs or so later! :)

I can remember the teacher throwing a wood chisel at someone who was mucking around, and another trick was to hit you across the knuckles with a steel rule.

I also remember cutting the thumb of my left hand with a tennon saw. I was more afraid of the telling off that ensued, than the cut and blood. The telling off came before being given permission to get the cut looked at!

I often think about that teacher, and would love to know if he is still alive. As teachers went, he was one of the best! :)

I admire anyone that's prepared to give back their knowledge to children, and often take days off work to go and help in my daughter's primary school class. I never appreciated just how much of an effort the teachers make, and how run off their feet that they are.

Our woodwork teacher would end all briefings with something like...

"...and remember blood makes the tools go rusty".

Our english teacher said we were the cream of english youth, rich and thick.

Agreed on the table though

Aidan
I agree with Tiddles...and I was a mainstream CDT teacher for 20 years - Rob

There seems to be a dice thing going on at the moment so I got one of my year nine groups on the case today.
These were the ones that finished, I am pleased, they worked well.
