I'm looking to get a jointer, I have a thicknesser but need to square up material. I will be using it more than a hobby amount but not all day every day so I don't think I want to sink 2k into this tool. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations on a fairly decent one please?

Planer or ‘surface planer’, sorry UK language pedant.

I have a Wadkin BFT 9, I think it is an excellent hobbiest machine. Long beds so can flatten 8’ lengths easily, 235mm (9”) wide. It’s very narrow for the width of board it can handle.

It’s not the most mechanically complicated machine and apparently the design of the bed slides is not brilliant. So don’t by a machine with sloppy beds or misaligned beds as they are not particularly adjustable.

What width do you need? I’d probably look for a PT and just use it as a surfacer. Sedgwick, Wadkin, SCM and Dominion would be my go to machines. There is a 16” Dominion on either Marketplace or eBay for I think £1k which is silly money for what it is.

I would say a 2nd hand 6" one like the Jet or an old Wadkin

they sell for around the £700 mark have nice long tables and are quite compact
