I am currently making a rather elaborate jewelry box in aformosa, yew and sycamore. When I work out how and have bought a new camera I will try to post some photos! I plan to make some very small discreet ebony handles for the drawers and cupboards - and wondered whether anyone has done this? They would be small - maybe turned - but need to be 1 cm or less in size to match the fine nature of the drawers and cupboard doors. Any advice gratefully received. Thanks - here's hoping

Ebony is lovely to turn almost like a waxy plastic, there will be no problem making small knobs and the ebony will take any detail you want to put onto them.

If you want them that small then pen blanks are the best source of timber. 60p should get you a piece 15mm sq x approx 150mm long from axminster et al.

Very economical!

Sounds like it's right up Grahams (Oldsoke) street as he specialises in miniatures. If he doesn't come back on this thread perhaps worth pm ing him.

Cheers Pete :p

I was following the 'never volunteer' doctrine indelibly imprinted on me psyche in a former life

Seriously Doc, if you need it doing I'm willing to have a crack at them (says he, thrusting aside his aversion to making two the same of anything  )

Thanks for all your comments - particularly Oldsoke for volunteering. I really want to make everything myself for this piece - and last night made a trial 'handle' in ebony which I am really pleased with - now I just have to make 8 the same for the other drawers! Thanks again will keep you posted and get my camera sorted out

 Sorry Doc, I'd wrongly assumed that you were one of the flat wood society without a lathe...

Sounds like there's a high satisfaction quotient attached to the project... please share a pic with us on completion...

I turned up some ebony handles for the drawers of the Elm Chest recently completed about the size mentioned. The only thing I did was to turn some practice knobs with shape variations in something that I could afford to bin. Handles and small knobs are so important IMO as they can make or break a piece - Rob

I faced a similar issue a while back and ended up buying the small black cupboard knob you can see here edwardian-button-cabinet-knobs.html

Iv always found it hard to get the quality i want in my own crafted knobs.
