Just thought I`d let you guys know i`ve purchased the above...
justified by numerous topics on this forum covering air filtration in the workshop and reading Workshop Dust Control ISBN 1-56158-499-1 by Sandor Nagyszalnczy (dont ask me to pronounce it, please.. )

purchased from Axminister, having heard good reveiws of their service.

cost £179.00 was toying with the Jet AFS 1000 but i`m glad i chose the 500, seeing the size if the thing.

the first thing too shock me was the sheer size of the thing, having read on Axminsters site that it was "bench mountable", and having only a 10X8 ft workshop, i felt this would do me adequately, I just want to see the bench Axminster had in mind, at 600 x 300 x 375, its huge for sitting on my bench anyway..

comes packed in the usual cardboard box with Jet logo plastered across both front and rear of box (so no hidden purchases, you know what i mean  )
inside the box its wrapped in a poly bag with polystyrene buffers/bumpers around the front and rear of the unit..

it comes with a remote ( which it handy as I intend to mount it ceilingward due to lack of space)

3 speeds, 1 at 283 cfm, 2 at 333 cfm, 3 at 440 cfm (manual reference) and 3 timer settings 2 hrs, 4 hrs and 8 hrs and full manual operation enabling you to leave it running for a preset amount of time after leaving the `shop to switch of automatically all available from the remote as well as the main unit.

build quality i thought was good, however no eyes supplied to mount it from the ceiling as standard, but predrilled holes front and rear to accommadate this at a later date.

i was a bit disappointed to find the "front grille" merely card as this is part of the front filter, but as its only collecting airborne dust i guess this is ok and is replaced when replacing the filter.

noisewise its a gem, with the 1st speed being nothing more than a whisper even at full throttle you have to listen for it, to hear it ( if that makes sense) able to talk at normal volume with no problem..
filters supplied front is rated a 5microns and secondary filter is rated at 1 micron.

so i guess no more dusty tools for me :)

hope this helps someone on their choice of AFD

Hi NeilO

Thank you for taking the time to do a review. I have this on my list and you've just firmed it up for me.

Ahh. I recently made the mistake of cleaning up my workshop enough so that the LOML could actually get in and walk into the middle. I could see her eyes popping as she looked around. Eventually, she offered to catalogue all of the tools for insurance purposes. Now I turned a very pale shade and, too hurriedly, made my excuses.

Cheers

Ain't that the truth. My re-badged Microclean one sounds like a 747 taking off. :( Thanks for the review, Neil. :)

Cheers, Alf

Hi Neil

I've had this for about a year now and I must say that I love it.
It is so quiet and very cheap to run so that I turn it on in the morning
and leave it on all day. It stopped all the dust that used to hang in the air
for ages and just a quick vacuum of the front filter now and again keeps it very clean and working perfectly. A great piece of kit that I would strongly recommend. Glad to see that you are happy with yours.
Mine is ceiling mounted.

All the best

John

Hi John,
so is mine now, and didnt pay the £22 odd Axminster wanted for their hanging kit....
4 x 1/2" pipe brackets a couple of extra nuts and 1 mtre of welded chain total £ 9.00 :D

Roger,
there is not info on longevity of the filters in the manual, and i ve only just got hold of mine..
A factor too take into consideration , would be how busy your shop is,i mean more work , more dust etc..
but like most filters change it when it becomes inneffective, saying that a quick blast with the hoover once in a while should keep it working for quite a time, i was thinking of changing the prefilter every 12 months and the main filter 2years, this may be overkill but i`ll see how i go..
