I think that's the point.The cam just makes an easy way to multiply the clamping force and no hammer is needed.Cam has a limited range of movement so spacer bars / one or a pair of opposing wedges are needed when using dog holes set out on a pretty coarse grid.Cams and wedges are cheap to make.The Walko / Bessey / Festool make them / and aliexpress versions of the horizontal clamp are more versatile but more costly.The axminster cams were originally made (in black and white) with a simple small hole in the middle and you ran a screw or dowel straight through into your benchtop. This really was like the Meyer in needing it's own holes. Later Axy jumped on the dog bandwagon and changed to a 20mm hole and added the wedges to accomodate the mft grid spacing.
