Having used a lathe from, well knee high, I always turned an item, the next was different, never the same apart from the timber. That part is easy. Having made a kitchen for a customer last year, he asked if I could make two stools,to match the kitchen (that be oak then) and so they could sit at the breakfast bar. (retractable that I made!!). No problem what so ever. Made them three legged (two less to turn). So here are the finished stools.

They are a pair, I'm still getting over this more than one (clone) aspect.
If you want to check that your not seeing double check me blog

My hat off to you sir. Making two of a kind is at present beyond me. My speciality is making everything as a unique item. Making two that actually look like a pair is a different skill level IMHO.

Pete

Pete thanks for the reply. believe it or not they were when I put my mind into gear not that difficult to do. I made the first set (top) to shape then made a template to bore the hole at an angle. About 5 degrees of the triangle. I managed to f... the second hole on the template, but carried on. It looked ok so I went ahead with the first seat. finished the ends on the legs to project above the seat by oh a little bit. Put the legs in and well they looked ok. Went on ahead with the second seat. Well, can't believe it. Same result. Made up the stays, bored the rest of the holes, (note legs horizontal to drill) and well there they are. The finished items. Still trying to get over it myself.

Pete Many Thanks

Pete you can cut the sir bit out, just had a look on your web and there's a lot that I take my hat off to you several times over. STUNNING work. Still trying to laying out my web site. All the best.

Nice work,Malcolm - I find making a set of something quite a fun challenge;I've done coasters,eggcups,candlesticks,goblets etc.,but nothing on that scale yet,so congratulations :D
An alternative to the "T" stretchers would be to have a central disc, with three short stretchers all at the same angle - just a thought :-k (I have those from time to time.. )
Are the top of the legs wedged tenons ? And what finish have you used ?

Sorry for the extra questions, but always keen to learn :D

Andrew

Very good Malcolm, the only thing you haven't told us is what your customers thought :) . Hope you've kept the measurements/angles for more clones when they ring back and say 'actually we would like a set of six!'

Like these too, Malcolm - not just two stools looking the same but six legs! All my turning is one off items at the moment. I really like the simple design too - and in good, honest oak. Lovely.

Good clean lines Malcolm, don't know whether the design was customer dictated or just your good eye for form but it's far more impressive I think than one over embellished with coves and beads.
It certainly causes a re-think on approach when freehand duplication is required for the first time, very satisfying though when you find that you've mastered it.

Malcolm . Two of the same wow, I find it hard to make one of a kind
Very nice indeed, I think maybe you should change your avetar from furniture maker to MASTER Furniture maker. Well done sir.

Boysie39 Thanks. Jack mabe. Master of none

CHJ. The customer wanted to use the pull out breakfast bar that I designed and made into there kitchen, and said two stools please. Open design, not one little clue as to what they wanted :? . Tell a lie they did want them in oak. :)

stewart. I'm glad I made them with 3 legs each, and not 4

Johnny.t. I put the cheque in the bank 9.15am Monday :D . Angles etc filed.

PowerTool, Thanks, I didn't want to overpower a simple design. They are wedged with a dark wood wedge. The finish is two coats of clear wax and a little elbow work.

Thanks for all your comments.
