Up the proverbial creek
Last year, Trevtheturner, bless him, sent me an unexpected Christmas present of a pair of beautifully turned pens. This year I was going to reciprocate with something to try and ween him off his lathe a little further  , but as many of you are aware events overtook us. Which just goes to show you should carpe diem whenever possible... :( But it inspired me to finally have a go at turning some pens myself, and so here's the resulting Christmas gifts for family and friends. Thanks for the shove, Trev; you're not forgotten.

Now those are nice. I would love a pen like that but the high costs to set up would not be worth it for me. Maybe one day. Until then i may read up on the subject who knows.

Nicely done there Alf, do I detect a 'Turn Around' in you approach to tailed tools?

I too think of Trev. every day as I walk past a turned piece made from a gift he presented me with, his encouragement behind the scenes of the forum was an example to all.

Lovely work Al... I'm even more peeved 'cos I didn't get down to see them in the flesh!

I think that was the only up side to your not making it - no close scrutiny of my turning by an expert... 8-[

Barry, friction polish. I now see that the dedicated pen turner can make the finishing a whole extra art form, but I didn't know that at the time. :D

Cheers, Alf

Alf - what lathe did you do the pens on - do you need a small penmaker's lathe ( I think APTC do one) or just the mandrel(?) wot fits into a larger lathe? Just curious 'cos they do look rather tasty - Rob

Just the mandrel, Rob. Although if you desire a "need" for a smaller lathe, do say and I'll edit for the benefit of SWMBO...

I know what you mean Alf. There are a lot of people going to some extreme lengths for that perfect finish.

Have you tried the CA finish since?

Lovely pezzies Alf, beautiful. I'm not on your christmas list by any chance am I?
