Is this asbestos?

Hi everyone,

Having trouble identifying this insulation in the garage roof, this would've been installed around mid to late 70's.

Concerned it's asbestos but I can't see this type online.

You can't tell if something is asbestos just by looking. I would recommend taking a sample and using a test kit like the one in the link below. I used the same kit for my garage roof and it was an easy and quick service.

Looks like wood strand cement board, google it there’s loads of images

It does look like fibre cement board to me too, but suggestions to be careful are well heeded

Could also be shredded paper card or plastic ,doent look like any type of asbestos insulation ive seen before.

As I get one could be real worried about this kind of thing.

I was thinking it its the same deal for roof tiles.
I see these all the time, going nearly for free on local ads.

Are these still being sold, or are they off the market as they are dangerous?
Seem's some of the northern European countries aren't phased about asbestos.
Regardless of that, it is all very confusing,
It it true even regular slates can have the stuff in them aswell?

Your council will test for cheap or possibly free.

Well, Glasgow and Edinburgh certainly do.

If it is built into your garage it will generally be safe as long as it isn’t giving off dust and you don’t damage or drill it.
If you are leaving it you can seal it so it doesn’t give off dust and forget about it.
If you are looking to remove it or damage it in some way I would agree you are best off getting it tested.

Dealing in any products containing asbestos is illegal and I believe this covers private sales too.
The fact of the matter is that asbestos is a fantastic building material that has been used in all kinds of materials for centuries. The down side being that it can kill you slowly and horribly.
If you are buying materials from a private seller on eBay you have no way of knowing what’s in it. The professional reclamation yards should have checks in place to ensure that they aren’t passing any on.

My late mums house was extended in the 70's & roofed in a very similar board called Denatherm, As said above it looks like Stramit but there were quite a few manufacturers ,Many of these types of board did in fact contain asbestos in varying quantities.
I could find virtually no info on the board used in mums place.
Only sure way to know is get it tested.

I was going to buy a house earlier in the year that was insulated with this stuff and I'd agree, it looks like stramit board.

It's made of straw I think. No idea whether they would have included asbestos though.

Hi, I was faced with a similar dilemma when I repaired my garage roof a few years back. The stuff in question was different to yours, however I was suspicious.

I ordered an online testing kit, in which you get protective equipment, all the stuff you need to handle the , material, good clear instruction and where to send the sample for testing which is included in the price of the kit. The result came back negative for the material and gave me reassurance to continue the work. It used to cost £40, but I see the price has risen to £50.
