I bought two new tape measures from Lidl a while ago, I took them into the workshop yesterday and both disappeared within about an hour. And pencils, it ate about six yesterday, no idea where they have gone. Last night I threw 10 pencils into the workshop before leaving, I wonder how many will be there when I next go in.........

I could have sworn a fog was forming in the corner when I shut the door, will my tools be covered in ectoplasm today?

I cut pencils in half so mine are 4" .
I usually find a few in my pockets when I put trousers in the wash.
I must have 20 or 30 scattered around the shop, That way I can always find a pencil.

Pencils, like tape measures, have the ability to drop out of our dimensional space on a whim. A few years back, I bought a job lot of 24 tape measures at Pugh's auction. I have four left.

Ah the workshop tokoloshe always hides the tool I want next, or the item I have been falling over for months on the day I want it.

The one I really can't explain that happened to me was this tale. A good friend gave me two quite rare local military cloth badges which for twenty years I kept in an envelope in little strong box.
Comes the day I want to show them to a friend, there is only one in the envelope, - to say I am gutted is an understatement, a massive search after friend has gone home reveals nothing.
About a month later we are spring cleaning so the carpet is up and there is the blasted badge underneath! Logic dictates it must have fallen out as I opened the envelope and I never noticed, but I never saw it fall, nor did I see it on the floor when I look down on discovering it was missing. It didn't have the decency to turn up during the great hunt next day. I can sort of work out how it happened, but the mechanics of the incident still confound me.

Can't cut mine as they only start off 2 1/2 inch long in the first place, Argos and Screwfix simply refuse to put long ones in the racks at the order desks. Damn cheapskates. :D

Mine hides the tool I put down 2 seconds ago.

If you really need jumps and scares in your workshop .... forget to turn your compressor off the night before.

Did that once, went out to the shed maybe 1am to grab something or other and it came on (a twin pistoned version too) - I came about as close as I ever desire to soiling myself, and I'm not a naturally jumpy person.

You think a compressor starting up is bad? Years ago i had a workshop on a farm & we had a couple of break ins nearby. I bought an alarm gun for less than a tenner from the gunshop, Its a nifty little device that holds a 12 bore blank & is fired by trip wire.
Came in to work one morning after a good night in the boozer. Feeling rather muzzy i unlocked the padlock & yanked the door open, as i did so a dirty great flame leap out at my feet accompanied by a very large bang. Didnt quite follow though but it was very close!

I have dreamt of attaching such a contraption to my shed alarm, but I never knew such wonders existed! [-o<

Back to Plan A then..... a smoke grenade fired by a solenoid attached to the alarm.

My favourite scrap dealer recently sold a WWII air raid siren; that would have made a nice addition.....

In the "legal" world they don't 8)

Alarm guns are quite legal, they have no barrel just a ring to hold the base of the blank.
This is the one i had, there are others a bit cheaper,https://www.amazon.co.uk/BISLEY-GAUGE-BURGLARS-INTRUDERS-SECURITY/dp/B0049ACMC6, Obviously you need to think about where its pointing but i shouldnt think compensation extends to new underpants.

You can sell a lot of things but its still illegal to use them.

The law says you cannot set a trap.
Which is why you will see a sign saying "warning razor wire" even though the wire is clearly visible.

The loud noise could be construed as harmful and would not be seen as reasonable force.
If they were legal I'd certainly have use for a couple.
