internet router advice sought

You can close that down DW and un-install it if you like or keep it for future. I can only leave the session not close down the application on your end.

I have closed down the meeting (I think) because I now have a new password.

Next problem I will have to find if its works, do I use the wifes laptop and then it asks me for that password you inserted?

BTW everyone, that was not easy because they did not ask for pass word.

They used the wording

"Pass Phrase "which was also not obvious.

Yeah thats right. If it is Windows 7 on the laptop you have it will prompt you for a password and you just enter it exactly as I typed in.

If it is windows XP and it doesn't prompt you and just fails to connect then:

On your desktop or via start menu, right-click My Network Places.

Right-click Wireless Network Connection, then select View Available Wireless Networks. This will appear:

Click connect on your wifi network which was called something beginning with S I can't remember exactly what it was.

It should do a bit of loading and then ask for a password. Put in what I typed exactly and you should be golden.

I recently allowed my grand-daughter to put a 'user' account on my laptop. She had to get my password to do it. Can I assume this is what is referred to, and that my router is password protected?

My PC memory? I just upgrade buy a new 'set' every now and then.

My personal memory will be okay. The Government are instructing GPs to give all of us old 'uns a memory test as a matter of course, whenever we have an appointment with them. I am waiting with relish for the first mention my Doc makes! I'll have some fun I think.

If you hve a router go and have a look like Chem suggested and see if there is a password which you have given it or if it is a default?

There's a password I have to use if I want to de-install and then re-install the router and the 'wireless' program. So that's good enough for me.
I could always go back to dial up!

There's a password on the cover of the disc that Virgin gave me when they set up my internet connection. They asked me to think of a pass I could remember. I forgot it, so it's a good job I wrote it on the disc-sleeve! That is the pass needed to set up internet accounts on the laptop and my desktop. I don't have a password for Windows itself, on the XP desktop PC, as I can't be bothered on a single user machine. On the lappie, I have a password to log on, as well as the password for the wireless installation. (This is only entered during installation) The main machine for the actual connection is the lappie. So the pass for the wireless network I assume is the one for the connection; Maybe! :mrgreen:
I hope I don't have to think of another password, as I might have to put them in a notebook there are so many! Which might defeat the object. Ho! Ho! Duhhh! :? I used to be confused, but now I'm just mixed up!

Doing a test the other week of 10 items then asked to recall them myself a short while later produced a surprise.

I think we are all going to have to become geniuses for the modern world.

Sounds ominous, and rather pointless. Is it conjecture, or have you heard summat?

My bank suggested the same PIN, and once memorised, no need to write it down. Fortunately I have two or three numbers I can choose from and there's no way I'd ever forget them, given normal health.

And I think it's geniusii! :lol: :lol:

Times have changed, theres nothing wrong with writing down your password these days. Physical theft is not the threat its Cyber theft. And if writing them down is what you need to do to use multiple passwords and protect yourself from a clean sweep password theft - which is to say they get one password that you use for everything and completely take over all your online accounts - then write it down!

I think what you are talking about Benchwayze might be that if you aren't using the admin account on your windows PC, and you try and set up another user account you may be asked for a password. Or perhaps something has been lost in translation and your youngling was setting a password for her new account on the machine.

A no nerds guide to passwords associated with Wifi and Routers.

1. Admin and Password - Used to access the admin controls of your router, often printed on the back of the router or set as default admin password. Required if you intend to change any settings. You can change this.

2. ADSL username and password - Your actual logon to the internet, you can't change it and are given it by your Internet Service Provider. Again either on the back of the router or in the paper work you got when you signed up. Put it into the router once and should never need to do so again unless you perform a hard reset of the router which is different from just turning it off and on.

3. Wifi Password - Often comes pre-setup and can be on the back of your router. However could be like DW's and not setup in which case you set it yourself. Needed the first time you connect a wireless computer to your home internet/network.

Q. My device is connected by a cable, which of these passwords do I need?
A. If you have a TV box like Tivo or such and its connected by cable you shouldn't need any passwords to connect to the internet. Likewise for computers connected by cable. If you want to change settings you will need the username and password that are No 1 on the list above.


I hope that helps some of you understand all the passwords - when you think about it there really are quite a lot!

I have not yet had a go with my Humax which uses a usb device and then works wireless to the router.

What do you think, the one on the router or the one you put in ?
