Interesting Oil Can

Found this at an Antiques fair, fairly nice but unremarkable apart from when you put the oil in.

Is the filler using an iris mechanism to open & close the hole?

so you rotate the ring to open and close the iris. Elegant solution on a simple oiler, I love it.

As far as I can tell it's not from Baines or Kayes who are the only oil can makers I've heard of - I'm aware that there are whole other specialist worlds of collecting where I don't venture - but I do agree that it's an elegant design, nicely made and photographed.

Thanks for the poestive comments on the photographs! Autunm is always good for photographs I think, certainly I enjoyed composing these.

It is an iris mechanism (glad I know what to call it now), twisting the rim is what operates it.

If the iris or mechanism is ferrous, better keep it oiled or it might seize up (hammer)
