Hello to all, On the lathe I have the shaft projects 65mm from the headstock. I have a few chucks, for this post I will be talking about 2 the Patriot & the Supernova 2. When I mount the Super 2 ,with the Insert the distance from the headstock to the jaws of the chuck is 142mm. With the Patriot the distance is108mm this is a differance of 34mm. I had noticed that on anything longer than150mm there was a lot of movement in the piece where the Tailstock had to be used this useing Super 2. With the Patriot whilst there was slight movement not nearly as much as with the Supernov a 2.
My lathe has a 1"x 8 tpi shaft, so why would there have to be that much differance in the inserts, as a matter of fact why have to use an Insert at all. Can Chucks not be made to fit the actual shaft ,I know somebody is going to say it keeps the costs down but for whom, Manufactures of both these Chucks were pointing out that the jaws were compatible so why not the Inserts. I have a couple of cheapo chucks which perform as good with no hype at all.
As a newby to turning can someone tell me if all lathes have a 65mm piece sticking out of the headstock. Thank you for any answers in advance. Regards Boysie just a little Pi###d off.

Boysie.
I sold my SN2 when i changed lathes because i was told that an insert would protrude too far,and can cause a wobble.
I also thought why have inserts if they do this :?
So i have now got a direct fit SN2 which cost me more for a new chuck but i feel better with it on the lathe.
Glad i decided to do this now :D

Hi Boysie,

I use the Axminster Clubman 100mm chuck http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-Axminster-Clubman-Chuck-K10-21160.htm

I am very pleased with it as it seems to be able to handle everything from tiny to really quite large pieces of wood! The thread on this chuck IS interchangeable BUT is more of a backplate than a single thread, making it more of an integral part of the chuck which gets rid of your wobble problem.

I've used the Supernova chucks on our club lathes and wouldn't swap mine for one!!

Cheers,

Richard

Boysie are your chucks locating correctly on the spindle register or are they just located on the thread portion?

See Here for standard spindle dimensions.

The chuck inserts should also have a register collar/section are they correctly seated?

If a chuck is relying solely on the thread form there is no guarantee that it will seat in the same place each time it is mounted and can move around on the thread form in use.

Also make sure that the lathe spindle threaded portion is not too long and bottoming in the chuck recess before the chuck/adaptor is firmly butting up against the register collar.

Chas, when I discovered this wobble I thought it strange that there was'nt a difinitive shoulder for the chuck to locate agsinst, so I went to the local Engineering shop and got him to turn a washer 5mm thick and the exact shaft dia. This worked great with the Patriot, because the insert screws right into the back of the chuck leaving just a 5mm nut and 2mm gap between nut and chuck total 7mm. However with the Super 2 it has what I believe is called a chuck exert which is an exact replica of the piece sticking out of the Headstock which means that when I screw this into the chuck and then onto the Spindle its another 50/55mm away from the headstock which makes the wobble twice as bad.
If the Insert was the same as the Patriot I would have no problem, but over here there are just a handful of tool shops that have lathes or someone who would who understand what your after and then a Manual is essentiel . I am a begginer and I gaurentee you that people who are selling me tools and parts for a Lathe would not have a clue where a part goes on a lathe. Paul J said he sold his Supernova to buy a supernova with the proper fitting. If I try to sell over here I wouldent even get enough for to buy an insert. Thanks for the help much appreciated will just use the Patriot for the time being, Regards Boysie.

Sorry Boysie i was getting me wires crossed
I was referring to excerts,as i couldn't get an insert to fit the SN2 i had to fit my new lathe,so i had to buy a new chuck which was a direct fit.
I did sell my other SN2 on ebay and did get a good price for it i thought.

Boysie, sorry you are having such problems, feel rather helpless here so far away from the recalcitrant lathe/chuck assembly.

You do really need the services of someone with a bit of engineering knowledge and a dial gauge etc. to determine the exact cause of the run-out problem and sort a fix.

Can you post a picture of the lathe spindle nose area you are screwing onto?

Can you get the guy who turned up your washer to check the nova chuck and adaptor for true alignment, would take 10 mins tops with metal lathe and a dial indicator.

Thanks Chas, I'm thakig the two chucks to the engineering shop on Monday and see if he can make an Insert for the Super 2 as is on the Patriot I'm sure that would sort the problem he will check the threads also Ihope this will sort it out.
Is it just me or has this happened to anyone else with a Patriot, you know where you screw the grub screw into the chuch to secure it to the shaft, well I screwed an 8mm grub in lenght into the the chuck and after useing when I tried to open the chuck it was locked. It seems thst there is a space from the chuck to the shaft and if the grub screw is not long enough it drops into the space and flyies about before getting up into the grease on the gears. I am considering swapping the lathes for one of them hang glider yokes at least I can only kill meself at that. Boysie, standing in a tank of sh## up to my bottom lip hopeing no one makes a wave. Regards to all.

The Patriot insert is compatible with the supernova2 swap them over and see if it solves the problem.

The fitting on the Patriot and the SN2 chuck is the same for the insert or should be unless your SN2 is a dedicated thread version. If you are using and exert which moves the chuck another 50mm or so away from the head stock then it would sound to me like a dedicated M33 or 1 1/2 x 6 supernova and not a standard one. Exerts are never accurate I try to avoid selling them

Russell, That is what is wrong you've hit the nail on the head, I have to use an exert to use the Supernova. What is the situation now do I have to change the chuck or can I buy an insert as with the Patriot. I had a problem with the Patriot in the beginning as is well known by now I am a beginner and when I bought the Pat. when I got home 87 mls. it would not fit so Ph.call he would send the right one. some 2 weeks later I said I wanted a Super. and he sent it down by courier. I had said I did not need insert as I could use one from Pat. Oh no says he they must go together and so Super. arrives with what I know now is an excert. If you happened to read my second post I was not being smart when I said I am buying from people who have not a clue. If I asked for a Texturing tool I could be sent a mucking wheelbrace for a truck. If you can advise me to change the chuck or can I get an Insert for it would be obliged.
Oh you lucky people to have so many suppliers to hand . They are lucky over here "the suppliers" that I dont Imbibe any more and that they live so far away from me . Regards Boysie. Calming down somewhat.

just noticed your lathe thread is 1 x 8tpi. If your supernova thread is smaller that this you have been sold a Supernova2 with what I suspect is a 3/4 x 16 tpi thread if it is larger than 1 x 8 try the patriot insert in it. They are the same inserts fitting for Patriot and supernova. If it fits you just need an insert. If it does not fit then you have a direct threaded Supernova2. You could machine it out but you need to find a good engineer for that.

Russell ,I have the head stock the two chucks and the Insert and the two Excerts loaded in the car at this moment heading for the Engineering shop . Thanks to you and all who helped me "in my hour of need" where would I be without UK workshop, Russell tou need a tin of fly spray or a swat pronto just in case ,The breeding season you know. Regards Boysie
