Hi all

An Inro box was worn by the Japanese with it's origins from the Edo period. They were traditionally used to carry small items such as pills, identity papers etc. Later on they became symbols of status.

The bamboo is run up the cord and this was tucked under the belt of the kimono.

The box to this measures 40mm x 50mm

The box is oval in shape.

Beech, gold leaf, stains, raku beads, leather cord, black bamboo. Finished with satin acrylic lacquer to seal all the gold and staining on.

Hi Laird

Thank you

The colours I have to say are more crisp and bright in real life. I must get some daylight bulbs and a photo box.

I like it, not sure I'd want to make it. but I like it all the same. Well done.

I love this oriental stuff. I've never seen anything like this. It's unbelievable - but then, so was the last one.

The colours appear to blend into one another, though they just seem like 'dabs'. Do you put some sort of medium on first for them to run into, or is it just the bare wood ?

Hi all

Tom Thanks for your comment. These are fun to make. What is not apparent in the picture is that the box is oval.

Dan

Thank you

Mikec

These are a fun item to make and open to many different designs, they can be coloured or left natural. Thanks for your comment.

I enjoy the Japanese culture very much as you can tell from my work. It has a great depth and is interesting to research.

The wood is covered with gold leaf to give a base colour and a seal.

the colours are then dabbed on and bleed into each other. the effect can be changed depending upon the colours used.

Hi Mark,

I really like how this piece has many different elements that combine to create a well balanced and thoughtful whole.

I really like the shape of the little box, also i've made a few knifes with leather sheaths so I appreciate your use of leather here to. Sorry, I'm assuming the cord is leather?

Nice 1.

Hi Mark.

I hate everything about it and dont want to buy it thank you.
I will have another look when i see you tomorow.
I expect when i see it in the flesh i might like it a little bit .

Regards George.

Your taste is as bad as your spelling.

Very well executed Mark, and being as nobody has commented on;

Do tell how you achieved this (or was it just due to green turning coming good   )

Very beautiful. Be interested to know what Japanese people make of your work Mark....whether they would see it as a copy or as an example. Whatever they think I love it. Could cope with the kimono but not the obi bit

Thanks for your comment.

I can only surmise what a Japanese person would say as they think about things totally differently to us in the Western world. I expect they would look beyond what we would see for what it was at the time, but then not consider it any further on looking away.

But as I say I can only guess as I have only met a few.
