When the ebay auction ends you will have a 100% accurate answer to your question.

Only 15 minutes left on this auction as I type, but perhaps you have just enough time to pop round to the seller and ask him yourself. As you both appear to live in Wrexham.

Although, judging from the description on ebay, the seller doesn't seem to know too much about it either.

I hope the buyer doesn't think the plane is made of gunmetal. The bridge may be but I think the body is steel.
Although the plane may have been marketed by Badger I suspect it is in actual fact a number 2 pattern panel plane by spiers.
They seem to have supplied a lot of the london dealers at this period. This may be because he attended the great exebition around this time

Is it just me?

I am a bit sceptical, the op here and the seller on eBay both from the same place!

The same person or friend trying a subtle form of advertising.

Maybe I should just stop watching Agatha Christie.

My guess same person. Also suspect they had an email via ebay asking for a BIN price, hence asking on here for the value ;)

Good point about the gunmetal Richard (I was fooled by the golden tinge to the picture    ) very close to Mr Russells 1323 Spiers No1? in his "MIGHTY" tome 8)

Will you be joining the throng at DSA this week?

Andy

I messages him on ebay if he would buy it now and collect for cash and he declined I did not know what to bid on this plane as I had not heard of them I am not an expert I looked to this forum for a bit of advice sorry I asked the question I am new to this tool collecting seems it is more difficult than I thought and you all close ranks you should not assume because someone lives in the same town that its suspicious.rob

Rob

Don't get all defensive and there was no closing ranks.

Your first post was a bit short. Almost like an interruption. A simple hello and short explanation would have been a good start.

You have to admit it seemed a bit suspicious. Someone who is looking at spending upwards of £300 yet didn't really seem to know what they were buying is a bit strange to me, sorry if it seemed I was a bit sharp.

Anyway, welcome and if not frightened off tell us a bit about yourself.

Sorry I have never been on a forum before and wasn't sure how to start off I used to do a bit of joinery a few years ago and my grandfather always collected tools I was looking at ebay to see what was on there I had heard of spiers and Norris planes before but not much with badger on I was just interested I did not want to overpay.

Rob

Seems to me you were doing the woodworking equivalent of passing you test and going out to buy a Rolls Royce. I maybe wrong and totally misjudging you, if that's the case I apologise.

Be careful, there are a number of pitfalls with these high end collectible planes and without considerable knowledge I suspect you can get burnt.

Mick

And just as a matter of courtesy, we tend not to highlight any auction sales as one of our members may be intending to bid on it and highlighting it on here tends to spoil any chance.

There is no forum rule about this but it is just a matter of etiquette really.

Anyway...welcome to the forum Rob...and I for one think you are starting out getting a type of plane which will perform well and last you for many years more.

You can get a panel plane without any name...usually a Scottish pattern for quite a bit less than that one...again with a steel body. I paid about £60 for one but be prepared to do a bit of work on it.

Whatever is wrong with it, stay away from any which have cracked or broken soles...they go around the lever cap screw area....front or back when dropped...and occasionally have bad cracks in the sides.

Make sure the mouth is clean...no chips.

The rest is a matter of how far you want to go to restore it. Notice the one above has a chip out of the rear handle and is missing the lever cap screw and the iron and cap iron.

All of these are fixable and result in a really good all round plane.

I put a Quangsheng iron in this one and it really performs well but an old Ward parallel or I.Sorby are readily available on FleaBay. It planes really well....

It's nice to have a Norris or Spiers if you want to pay the premium...but some of these old no-name ones probably came from the very same workshops and were sold to customers to put their own infill in as a cheaper option.

Good luck with your search and if you want to PM me with ones you find on the way for advice...don't hesitate.

Cheers

Jimi
