Evening gents,
didn't know where to put this but as I've only ever posted in this room, it felt right. I've been into wood butchery for a while now doing the odd job and this and that. Spent more time playing with tools than using them and I'm not afraid to say so :) we all do it.
Last year I did a restoration course of fine furniture. The experience was fantastic, being in a place with like minded people of all ages and race for the same reason was refreshing and my anxieties of school and going back to college disappeared instantly. I learnt many things but I'd say what I took from the course most is that I don't want to do French polishing, the most boring thing I've ever done and that's saying something..
I digress,
While on the course the tutor was a man named David who also teaches the furniture course, naturally we talked about tools of old and such, from that moment I knew I had to do this course!

On Thursday I went to the open day at pool college for a sniff about, to keep this long story short I filled out the application and am waiting for my summons for an interview, then enrolement. :)
The first year is just hand tools :)) I should be ok. Only when you progress to the 2nd year can you go into the machine room (h&s)

I'm very excited about this and wanted to share my news.. I'm also going to (with the help from my partner) create a blog and as I do the course keep uploading what I'm doing, thoughts, you name it to help other who are in my boat (newbies)

Thanks for reading and expect WIPS and lots of posting in the next few months.
Cheers

Fantastic news Toby, I look forward to hearing all about it - you'll have to change your signature!

Good luck and best wishes,

Carl

Best of luck, Toby.
You have lots of enthusiasm and I think you will be a quick learner.

Good on you Toby. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I look forward to reading updates here, or on your blog.

Cheers, Vann.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments, I knew the hand tool room was the right place to post this.
I forgot to mention that during the course There are extra credits (projects to be done if your ahead) hopefully I fall into that category.
But best of all a guy from classic hand tools comes down with old tools and does demos in saw sharpening you name it :)
Exciting stuff.
Thanks again
TT

Congratulations Toby and I too look forward to following your progress.

Over the relatively brief period of time I have known you Toby...and as others have said so clearly...your enthusiasm and hunger for knowledge exceeds anything I have encountered for a very long time.

You have no problem showing your progress...warts and all and to see the progress you have made is very heartwarming.

To make the decision to get more formal training is a wise one. Not least for your own satisfaction but also because I firmly believe that you will contribute greatly to the woodworking community and this forum in particular as you progress along your fascinating journey.

I for one, will be watching eagerly for all the steps you make and particularly the things you make during this exciting time.

Bravo mate! You'll love it!

Thanks jim and everyone else,

This forum has been a heaven to me. I've met some fantasic people who have changed my life (sounds corny but it's true)
And helped me with so many things. tool identification, restoration, practical use, making a mess you name it.
The woodworking community (forum and others) have changed my view on people for the better.

To the point.. If I can give back just 1/3 of what I've been given then I've done my bit and I will do so :)
First I need more training :)

I've been practising joints by hand and will continue to do so daily so I have the upper hand at collage :)
Thanks so much everyone.

Have a good day

Good luck with the course. I started my apprenticeship 35 years ago tomorrow and whilst my career has taken me on another path I still think that the apprenticeship was the most constructive thing I ever did and would recommend it to anyone

I go for my interview tomorrow morning for collage :)
I'll be taking a few bits I've made to try and impress them.

Thanks
TT

Good luck!!! Wishing you much success :)

Would love to see the bits you have made so far :)

Jon.
