Hi guys.

One for the IT heads today.

I've just installed the Internet Explorer 8 update for windows XP. Prior to this update, I'd connect to the Internet by either pressing the Internet button on my key board or clicking the relevant icon on the desktop.

Since the update, I get the browser window opening but have the 'Explorer cannot display this webpage' message. To connect now I have to go into the network settings in the Control Panel, select my connection and click 'Dial'.

This only takes a few seconds but I'd rather have the convenience of the previous connection method.

Any ideas on how to fix this? I can do a 'system restore' if I need to but I'd rather give the update a chance.

Many thanks.

Bryn :)

Are you using a dial up modem or usb broadband modem?

First thought here is that you may need to set up Internet Explorer to automatically dial up. Some instruction here may help in this case
http://www.gn.apc.org/support/connect/winxp.

Or you may be able to configure this way:

I do not use IE8 but I guess that you will find similar to IE6 & 7 there is a menu option i.e. Select Tools / Internet Options / Select Connections Tab. Then press the Setup button - you should be taken through a set up wizard which will complete your connection.

Cheers :D

If you're on broadband, go to Tools, Internet Options, Connections and make sure that "Never dial a connection" is checked.

Hi.

Thaks alot for all the help. I've fixed the problem now. Went Tools>Internet Options>Connections and checked the 'Always dial my default connection' box. The 'Never dial a connection' box was already checked.

Strange.

Thanks again.

Bryn :)
