Identifying this wood

I salvaged this from a once expensive hand made sideboard someone was throwing out. It was covered in a nasty dark brown stain so a lot of sanding later it revealed this.
But what is it?

I've had it suggested as black walnut. It makes little difference to me other than I can accurately state what it is when I turn it into something else
