Identify the wood and finish

Hello

I wonder if someone could help me identify the wood that my front door is made of and the finish.

The finish seems to be a slightly shiny varnish with a very smooth finish. Could it have been a spray job?

I know it will be difficult to tell but maybe...

Hi there,

The wood is easy it's Sapele, the finish is more difficult but I'd hazard a guess that it's a clear poly urethane varnish may well have been sprayed, it does look like a custom made door.

Thanks a lot. I am planning on stripping it down and refinishing it by hand with a stain, something like

sikkens_cetol_novatech in teak or dark oak

Would you agree with this approach or do you have a better solution?

I used sikkens cetol on a south facing oak door in 2007. Although I have not seen the door since then I did bump into the customer last summer and he said the door looks as good now as when I first did it.

Thanks for that info, very helpful. I am trying to work out which product to choose as I see some of the Novatech are not suitable for hardwood or interior finishes.

Does this mean I should choose a different stain for the inside of the door?
