I've been asked to make a box for a retirement but having never made one before I don't really know what to include...

Anyway it's for a woman who likes Japanese stuff so probably keeping related to that would be best, although I'm certainly open to anything else...

Thanks box making chums

Have a look through this bookhttp://books.google.co.uk/books?id=...en+boxes#v=onepage&q=400 wooden boxes&f=false. This is on Google books and it lets you see quite alot of the book for free as it were. There are some beautiful boxes there - I use it as a source of inspiration for making jewellery boxes - so if someone comes asking me to make them a jewellery cabinet/box, I quite often give them the book to thumb through and then use that as a basis on which to make the box. There are obviously no plans in the book - just a series of photos, but it is a worthy reference source.
Hope that helps

I would say that the first things to do are to find out what sort of jewellery she is going to be keeping in it. My wife always complains about the design of jewellery boxes as she has lots of necklaces and no rings, so most jewellery boxes are not suitable for he (she needs lots of long flat drawers to lay out necklaces in).

The other thing would be to decide if you are going to make a japanese jewellery box, or a jewellerybox inspired by japan. For the former you will need to do some research into japanese jewellery boxes, for the latter you will need to look at japanese architecture and culture to decide which elements incorporate japanese "style" as far as you are concerned. For my typical japanese themes are all around their temples entrances with latticed beams and the zen gardens. So things like simple skeleton boxes with drawers that slide into a frame without panels would be the sort of thing I would think of.
