Hi All,

Aquired this lump at the weekend, and turned this little weedpot. The wood had a strange tobaco smell to it,

Anyone any ideas ?

Hi Loz.

I find it very hard to 'spot the wood' a lot depends on the photographer  .

BUT when you talk about the strong smell, and looking at the colour of the raw piece of timber, I think it could be Acacia. The heartwood has a lemon yellowish colour, with a dirty off white sapwood, and bark similar to Oak.

Yet I must admit it does resemble Oak with the rays, just seems to be too much colour demarcation between heart and sapwood for me.

Its not Oak, i think its along the lines of acacia as stated before or some kind of other coniferous, wood. the bark looks oak like but not dense enough for oak but the colour (from what i can see on picture) and wood structure doesnt look it either.

Possibly Cotinus because of the smoky smell. It's a very sticky wood.

Does that help?

How about Holm Oak (evergreen oak) Bought some at stoneleigh on Friday and it looks very similar.
