I have had a request from the LOML to make a box as a gift for one of her friends, for christmas, so knowing how long it takes these days for me to get anything finished I started last month.
I had bought a bit of purple heart and resawed it for the stock:

You will notice that I desided that why make one box when I could do three, the setup took as long as the work so doing three did not slow me that much.
I found the way the shaving came off on the shooting board some what hipnotic. 8)

But I have to confess I found the purple heart hard to work and had to resort to the belt sander on some of it.

It is odd stuff, the colour disappearing as I worked it and slowly recovering as it rested. :-k
Here they are finished, this picture is just for Mark, it shows the normal state of my bench.

There are a few more pictures on Flickr.

your telling me :D

so apart from the Purpleheart (which is obvious  ) whats the other to made out of Dave, particularly the red one ?

btw, nice looking boxes ...
and I see you keep your workshop as tidy as I keep mine

Neil,

The red wood is Padouk, it loses the vivid red colour when waxed, I will take another picture for you and the some what plain looking one is English oak.

Very nice, Dave - and ready more than 6 months early! I usually leave it until the last week before making anything for a present - must do better.
I like the purpleheart one - I've got some stored away for later - but I've got to learn how to sharpen tools properly to cope with it first!

Good job, Dave! Colours look wonderful - keep 'em out of direct sunlight and they should last a while.
Keep up the good work,
Philly :D

They look lovely Dave, especailly with such strking timber colours - they work really well together

Nice belt sander

I can't decide on which I like the look of more - the set of boxes you've made or the shavings produced from them! :D

I've got a cheap and nasty sander just like that one but I cannot get along with the thing. The disc sander's okay with an MDF sub-table but results are poor on the belt sander - how on Earth did you manage?

I've had a similar sander for a few years now Olly, different make but pretty much the same, and it was only when I changed to having the belt run vertically and put the small table in front of that (with a larger mdf table top on it) that I really started using it much, and now I find myself using for all sorts of things and the sanding disc part is pretty much redundant as there is nothing that does that can't be done on the belt as far as I can figure.

The key for me was using the table with the belt vertical otherwise the belt is quite difficult to use at all.

Cheers, Paul. :D

You keep it tidy then   at least more so than mine.

The boxes look good, especially as a set of three different coloured wood. I like the colour of the wood you've used. Where do you get purple heart from as I've never seen it for sale anywhere?

regards

Brian

I got that bit at Good Timber, it was a turning blank, not the cheapest way to buy it but they were out of boards. I am sure that Yandles had some but I was there 18 months ago so don't take my word for it.

I like the shavings picture too though!
That's why I took the picture of them, I kept them on the bench for some days, just going back for another look and trimming an off cut to make a few more. I must get out more.
