Norfolk, near the sea.
SWMBO sneaked a couple of my things to show a local art gallery(called 'The Showcase Gallery' it only sells local art). She said the chap liked them and took our number. This was the middle of last week.
Enough time passed that we thought he didn't like them that much, then tonight he rang and asked if he could come and see us.
I layed out a good selection of stuff for him to look at and his words after studying it for a minute or two were"I like it, I can sell it and I want it!".
It kind of knocked me back, he said he has another turner and my stuff was much better(doesn't say much for the other guy  ). I had to show him my workshop and he seemed impressed by the huge amount of shavings on the floor(think he was just checking that I made it and not some guy buying stuff in to resell)

This is weird, not expected but feels good. tomorrow morning at 9 I've got to deliver 16 pieces to him for a display

well done JT and not before time too. Her indoors did you good and dont forget to take her out after your first commision

Thinking cap on now johnny to continue output on "similar but different" theme to keep the gallery interest going. If the Gallery owner thinks it's better then at least the final presentation must be an improvement on what he has at the moment, finish is paramount, design is anybodys guess.

If his current stock is anything like the dross being offered by our local "Made in -----" shop your stuff should do well.

=D> \:D/ :eek:ccasion5:

Well done Johnny, you will have to let me know which gallery so when I am up that way next time I can have a look.

Well done Johnny. Must be really exciting. Tho, keep your wits about you. Make sure you're charging right and don't get caught up in the moment. It's business after all and you need to keep your feet on the ground. Be certain the figures work and that this guy can really sell your work. The other thing is to learn from this experience. Much like the craft fair. Take notice of what sells and what doesn't. Make the stuff people want and chuck the odd thing in there to test the market.

Keep us in the loop.

Thanks guys, I'm still a bit shell shocked TBH.

We took it to the gallery this morning and the guy cleared a whole shelf for my things, the other turner in there had his stuff 'condensed'(it wasn't very good, mainly straight bottomed straight sided bowls some with those tacky pewter tops). After we filled the shelf and had some things left over, he actually moved a couple of small paintings for a couple of my larger bowls  and put the two rotten apple wood clocks I made the other week in a glass display case at the front of the shop with an 'exclusive to this gallery sign'. I hope his customers like them all as much as he does  All 16 things are on display, hopefully they will look reasonably priced against the paintings which range from 120-800 quid

Steve, SWMBO is too pregnant to go out(4 weeks to go ) but I'm treating her to a Chinese takeaway tonight for her bravery and initiative

JPT you come out this way? You'll have to pop round for a cuppa when you do :) (that applies to everyone else aswell)

Wizer, I kept the prices quite conservative and will go in to see how much he's priced them at(i.e added to my price, although if he can sell it I don't care if he doubles it). If it sells fast the next batch can be priced higher, if not i'll have to have a rethink. He wanted mainly bowls ,platters, vases but I slipped in one of me crotch bowls to try and a rectangular one :D

Well done, Johnny. It was my wife, speaking to a shopkeeper, that got the first pieces of my work displayed and sold. The craft fairs came much later, and the galleries later still. I think our wives are sometimes willing to 'push' on our behalf when we ourselves have too much self-doubt to do it. I wonder how many others began selling as a result of their wives input?

Great news J.T., and well done to your missus too,
my best wishes to you both for the "new arrival".

Thanks everyone :D

Thank goodness for wives  I would never have gone in there myself,my wife said she was full of confidence until she got inside, then she felt very nervous but had passed the point of no return(the door)

Isn't it nice to get a positive post like this, where somebody has actually had a success and feels that he has achieved something, without getting a really snide, critical and nearly offensive reponse from somebody who calls himself SOULFLY????

Well Done to you and your Lady Wife,JT. I'm sure your workmanship will stand up to, and hold it's own anywhere.
Best wishes to MRS JT for her coming event, hopr everything goes well. REgards Boysie.
