... I just had to try them out. So I re-shaped the tote for my LV LA Jack.

Previously shaped totes for LV planes from scratch, such as ...

This She-oak tote is angled forwards as the LAS is a light plane and benefits from downforce.

Similarly, the tote for the LA Jack can be more upright, but this time I did not make a tote from scratch but reshaped the original (in Bubinga) ...

Here you can see the alteration (compared with a BUJ) ...

Hi Philly

Choosing a starter set was very difficult as I did not know where to start. I had been making do with some rough Chinese riffers, and a variety of Nicholson files. Mike Wenzloff gave me some advise, and so I got the following:

AU-8-150-13HR Auriou Straight Rasp #8 150mm - 6" G13
AU-8-175-10 Auriou Straight Rasp #8 175mm - 7" G10
AU-8-250-6 Auriou Straight Rasp #8 250mm - 10" G6

I now know that I need at least two more. The G6 is very similar to a Nicholson #49 (i.e. coarse), and I need one (G9 ?) to bridge the G10. The G13 is not fine enough for finishing and I will now get a G16.

Any recommendations based on your experience?

I have the AU-8-150-13HR Auriou Straight Rasp Grain 13 one and will certainly look for a finer one like you suggested.

The 13 removed the wood (beech) so fast I never went back to my coarser ones!
The Aurious are more expensive than the others but their performance is amazing!

Hi All,

I highly recommend the Auriou Grain 14 Modeller's Rasp. It's substantially more fine-grained than the Grain 13 Cabinetmaker's Rasp--they're in two different series--and you can easily transition from the Grain 14 into the files. Grain 15 is a very nice tool also, but I tend to go straight from the Grain 14 into a half-round Grobet Cut 1 or Cut 2 file.
