I'm starting to get obsessed with hand planes

Including my new (to me) block plane I'm up to ten and still looking  I doubt I'll ever use them all, I just like collecting things - I like to have a full set whether I need them or not

Anyway, having a tidy up the other day and being me I didn't want to throw useful sizes of timber away so I knocked up something to get my planes off the shelf and into a drawer where they won't get damaged.

It's nothing special, just offcuts of 1/2" ply, 1/2" OSB and some bits of 2"x1" PAR with some Ramin parting bead for dividers on the bottom layer. The second pic is a removable top tray. Also I've used some of the Ramin to lift the front of the soles in case I leave the blades protruding.

Not pretty but it does the job.

Note that both #5 Baileys have the same repair to the front of the rear handle. Stupid composhit handles!

Ooooh nice. I have a sweet spot for planes too, especially block planes. Despite the few i listed in the plane thread. I think i have another 4 or 5. Despite giving one away last year LOL

Well done, you have made a box that is about an eighth of the size you will need by this time next year!!!!!

Seriously though, good idea. Nice little project.

Oh dear Steve, do you think it's something to do with bikes? This is what I've been designing for my to do list.

You're welcome to working drawings if you want them, this is as far as I've got with it. I intend to make a 'Snapon' type tool chest for my wood tools.

I've a serious lack of space at the moment. I have a lot of sheets of polycarb roofing in there at the moment that I'm going to use to put a canopy along the side of the house. While they're in the workshop I can hardly move. I have floor space of about 4' x 18", now covered in saw dust from my turning attempt  Wall space at the moment is non-existant. I'm just having to make do with what storage I've got. I managed to actually bin some stuff a few weeks ago and ended up with a filing cabinet empty (one deep drawer with two shallow ones above), so that's been used for the planes.

Once I have some turning chisels they'll probably end up in the top drawer and there's plenty of space in the middle drawer for about 8 block planes. One down, seven to go

I can highly recommend the stanley No65. Best plane and most comfortable plane i've owned. 2nd most comfortable was my LN 60 1/2. Need to get another one, unless they come out with a No 65 that is :D

You guys aren't plane collectors - you're plain addicts. I'm sure there must be treatment you can get. Probably starting with getting you off the larger 08 jointers until they finally wean you down to the smaller finger planes

Right! That's it !! I'm not inviting you to look in my workshop - I'll never live it down.

Cheers, Vann (hammer)

Something about planes in particular that fascinates many of us - it may be to do with the fact there are more parts to them so more fun to be had tuning and fettling. Also the enormous variety from infills and woodies to Baileys, European woodie hybrids etc etc.
One thing I like about planes (just one  ) is the bargains that can be had; another is the outstanding quality of many old blades...

Can I encourage you to add a few woodies to the collection. They can sometimes be found by the box-full for peanuts, they are usually easy to tune and wonderful to use.

Then you need to consider making a few. It's the start of a long and rewarding journey. Welcome to the plane-nut club =D>

I need a slightly convex plane for a jewelry box project with a coopered lid (Re John Bullar). I plan to buy a cheap woody and 'plane the plane' base to form the curve I want then re-shape the blade. All great fun!

I hace said it before and I will say it again. You all keep forgetting the little pink tablet.

The pink one?

Oh dung! I took the green one....... :?

Steve fettling and tuning often reminds me of the infinite variations there were to be messed with when running 2 stroke race bikes. Causes a afflicted to often sit with a thousand yard stare whilst contemplated what might be possible

Vann I'm sure in your case it's a passion not an obsession (grovels unashamedly).

I needed something similar for my box build last year. Made my own krenov style plane out of scrap oak, worked a treat and saved money. :)

Jim, please pay more attention to your typing. You seem to have missed out a letter T from the last word of your post. As written, it makes no sense at all...
