I was lucky enough to find a No 4 SS record at a bric a brac stall (for £7 - gloat).

Once I cleaned off the paint & putty & light rust everything is near prisine. I'm particually pleased with the two part cap iron ( I was about to buy one from Axminster!) As its my first.

The one problem is that there is a hairline crack in the cheek of the sole.

so.......

Do I fettle the sole up & live with the crack ( I doubt it will effect use) or do I tranfer all parts to a Stanley sole ( I have a few part fettled).

You might want to see if the crack opens under pressure; if it doesn't I'd be inclined to live with it.

Otherwise, I'd look for another Record #4, and transfer to that.

Nice gloat!

The only difference between a Stay-Set #4 and a standard #4 are the two-piece cap iron and the lever cap (which has "SS" on it). So if you can find a #4 of the same age, all the parts should transfer OK.

Cheers

Hi, Lurker

Nice find, I wouldn't the swap bits to anything other than a Record, I could get the crack welded for you, it will leave a shiny part on the plane, but see if it opens like BB says first.

Pete

Would I be really off message if I suggested using it on some timber and see if you get results you are happy with.

If so, great; if you get problems then consider replacement?

Yeah \:D/
I was rather chuffed with myself for recogising it for what it was.

Anyway - I'm convinced - will it will remain pure if slightly damaged.

I have already bought some "near as dammit" blue enamel paint from Wilkinsons

Well I've already got some nicely (even if I do say so myself) fettled Stanleys that plane wood well beyond my ability. I'm lead to believe the record SS is at least another league up. Assuming the record lives up to its promises then it will replace the Stanley No4 .

I'm not a collector

No chance! I don't have the room for one thing.
I have to admit Pete has lead me astray though.
He keeps visiting to give me another good shove down the slope

I think the lever cap screw may be slightly different too - I had to swap that over when I took the blade and cap-iron from a SS donor.

Which was a shame, since the SS lever cap screw was in poor condition.

Well, I've "done it up" & when I lapped the side with the crack, it "disappeared" - so result!
Glad I asked as I wasn't going to bother with the sole but just use the frog & irons.

It's a nice plane & is noticably better than my no.4 Stanley, so am muchly chuffed all round.

Not being a collector  I have a nice stanley No4 looking for a new home. Sorry I can't be bothered with posting it but if anyone wants to collect (5 mins from jn 23 of M1) its going for a song ( proceeds to local Childrens Hospice).
