I've got a large wardrobe that I want to stain using a HVLP system. Could anyone recommend a good stain and weather I should seal the surface first? I've heard a lot of mention of a brand called Xpoly or something like that? I've never used HVLP and not really got much experience of finishing wood other than Wax. I'm hoping I can spray on a sealer, then a colour and finally a lacquer. I'd like the colour to be a beech colour to match similar furniture.

I would always stain the wood first. To get a steamed beech colour on pine you need to use a mahogany wood-dye diluted right down with whatever solvent is appropriate. For the readily available Colron wood dyes this would normally be celllose thinners. Check on the can.

The dye can be sprayed on but it is easier to use a bush and rag. When it is dry apply a sealer and then a top coat.

Be aware though, that the colour will change dramatically as the wood mellows. Whatever colour you stain pine it always ends up kind of orangey!

The Xpoly you refer to is probably osmo polyx wax oil. I have used this on hardwoods with very good results but i have never tried it on softwood but i presume it will be ok. You can get tinted osmo wax oil that will tint and finish at the same time otherwise do as dan says and experiment with thinning down some stains.

If you want to spray you will have to get either pre catylsed lacquer or waterbourne lacquer which you can also tint to get the desired shade. There is quite a learning curve as well as safety issues to spraying and i would reccomend starting with a small project rather than a large wardrobe.
