Hey there from the great white north of the USA! I've really enjoyed surfing this forum and seeing all the outstanding craftsmanship here.

I've been on a box making kick lately, and am working on some custom lids for a couple of Birdseye Maple boxes. I made my first crack at bent laminations for the handles on the box lids using strips of Wenge and Padauk. The pic shows the look I'm going for on the lid.

You can catch more of the gory details and pics in my latest blog entry.

Also, a pic for Devon...I'm working on a small display table of Ash and Sapelle. It's actually been in the works for some time now, but keeps getting pushed to the bottom of the project pile!

I've still got some touch-up and sanding to do before applying a finish, but here is the first box.

I like that box. How thick/thin are the laminations on the handle? Is it then a matter of gluing, bending and holding until the glue sets? Do you vacuum bag it?

Thnks
Mark

Thanks Tierney. The larger dowel hides the fact that I used a screw to square up and clamp down the handle for gluing. I added the two smaller dowels to create some pattern and add more strength.

Mark, the handle is make of five strips, each 1/16 inches thick (3 Padauk and 2 Wenge) that were glued and clamped to a bending form. No vacuum bag used.

mnpete, thanks for showing I might convert your handle idea to feet for a box, might make a change for my flat bottoms.

Hi Pete, nice work, love the box.

I was in Maple Grove and Champlin last week. What did you do to the weather?? :D

Regards,

Woody, I like the feet idea! I have four more of these laminated arcs, so I my have to hit the sketchbook! :)

Peter, you must have been here for the rain. A couple weeks earlier and you would have seen the tornados run across the north side of the Twin Cities. Minneapolis was hit pretty hard!

I was definitely there for the rain. I'll skip the tornados if it's OK with you!!
