Any one got a good way of removing glass that has been siliconed into the rebate. I have 10 windows to remove and replace with double glazed units for a customer. The only way I can see is to smash the windows and peel the segments away from the silicone. The trouble with this is showering the work area with small shards , but with cats and dogs living at the house may not be such a good idea. Any suggestions please.

Silicone and glass usually equals sharp stanley knife blade. This stuff sticks like fukk but a Stanley knife slid beneath the silicone and the glass usually sorts it out. A clean putty knife also helps levering the glass from the rebate

You need a flexible sharp blade and lubricant.

A mix of fairy liquid and water in a hand spray will do the lubrication.

And a flexible filling knife sharpened on one edge will do the cutting.

Start at the top and a little down each side.

Once you have got the silicone cut a bit you can use a flat pry bar or a glazing shovel to ease the glass out.

You can get special film to stick to glass to catch all the bits if it smashes, I use sticky back plastic or packing tape depending what's to hand.

Oh and a glass sucker or 2 makes it easy to push/pull the glass when it's in the frame.

Carpet protector works well - doesn't puncture easily.

Are they beaded?

The best way I have found is a fein multimeter, or Bosch GOP with the rigid scraper, run down the edge of the glass inside and out, pushing along at an angle. it takes about 15 seconds each side, no matter what sealant was used, butyl, dry seal, poly sulphide, silicone... Silicone is actually (or usually is) easy to remove from a timber window as it doesn't stick to the wood that well.

If you don't have one, a cheap one at £60 would be woth your while, if your not sure about spending the money.

Hi all thanks for the replies job done. I sharpened up my putty knife and managed to work it between the rebate and the glass and cut the silicone. It was not easy but got them out in the end.
