Hi
I am building 2 sets of oak french doors with the beading on the inside.
as im double glazing the doors there isnt a lot of space for a thick beading.

So the bead will only be 10mm wide - i would usually glue and pin this but as its oak if i use pins the tannin might discolour the wood.

would brass pins be ok or do they make stainless pins?

Mike

Brass shouldn't react with the tanin but I don't think I've ever seen stainless steel pins. I have seen sheradised but I don't whether they'd react or not... It's only ususally when you add water to the equation that the tanin in oak begins to react with steel.

If the beading's only 10mm then it might be a good idea to drill clearance holes for the pins, just in case they split the oak. :)

Yes, you can get stainless steel pins, but unless security is a problem silicone sealant will hold the whole lot in place on its own.

If you don`t want the mess of silicone You can get double sided foam tape in differing thicknesses.
I use 1mm & 3mm when fixing double glazed units in doors, i get it from National plastics, but i imagine any plastic trim & facia company would sell it.

that sounds better than silicone but how would you use it?
just stick the bead to the glass?
sorry not sure what you mean

or is it thin enough to stick on the bead to the door as well?
i wouldnt want it to show

mike

The tape will hold the glazed unit to the door frame, then tape the bead & stick the bead to the glass. On Oak a few stainless pins through the bead into the door is all you need.
The tape really does stick, a tip is to stick the tape to the frame rebate, then wet the tape with a mixture of washing up liquid & water, this allows the unit to be positioned. If you don`t wet it you only get one chance to position the glazed unit.

What about superglue would that be any good for you, the two pack type with the activator (mitre fix).

I think I would just pin it, I have pinned loads of narrow oak beads over the years and had no problems. I have used the headless pinners or just pre-drilled and nailed by hand.

i have a air nail pinner which would be nice and easy but i though maybe condensation would affect them and stain the oak?

Mike

As long as the pin goes under the surface, fill the hole with wax stick & no condensation should get to the pin.

Bit of a pain that you have to buy a kilo., i only need a hand full!
But you will have some next time you need them, if you can find them in 10 or 12 years time.

I looked at that link !!!!!!!!!

did you see the price!!!!!!

I could buy a door for that LOL

MIke

ok i was exagerating

I get mine from the local boat builders. Norfolk? There must be one or two boat yards somewhere near you.
