It is a lovely looking plane....
Wouldn't mind one!

Get one of these instead, Jim

A far better plane (assuming you're a user) for a lot less money.

Cheers

Yes Paul the LN would perform as good if not better, but I suspect the Norris will not be used for its intended purpose.

It would seem that some names go for more these days...and others go out of fashion. Lovely looking plane those mitres....on my list of projects.

That Norris is looking to go into outer space price-wise.

I wouldn't mind betting...nah...

I'm not saying a dicky bird! 8)

While a gloat a while...I have to say that there is one up there in the ether I might sell the missus for....but I'm keeping quiet about that one...in case I can raise the dosh....which I can't...now...to bed...got to be up in four hours...

Hadn't noticed this thread before posting mine. As I said, it's a nice enough A11, but surely not that nice. I would certainly be surprised if it is not bound for the US.

As for the Stanley No 9, I certainly would not swap it for my LN no 9. Interesting point; what would others rather have, a nice condition and valuable old Stanley or an altogether superior LN copy?

I'd prefer a new, unabused, Lie-Nielsen to a nice condition old Stanley and I wouldn't pay nearly as much for an old Stanley, as I would for an equivilent L-N (phew :!: maybe I'm not a collector after all).

Cheers, Vann.

I see no reason a SKEWED Philly plane wouldn't out perform every thing mentioned in this thread.

BB - the plane in the picture is the non-skewed model, and it performs very well indeed. I was fortunate enough to own a LN no9 when I ordered the Philly mitre (which was part of a set), and able to compare the two side by side. IMO the Philly had the edge on the LN, and seemed easier to use. The LN went to e-bay shortly thereafter.

It's one of those 'horses-for-courses' things for me. Up until fairly recently old planes, saws etc didn't really feature on my radar, but after the acquisition of a couple of old Stanley No.4s, I have developed more of an interest.

Having said that, for work I reach for the LNs every time; I like the old tools for their aesthetic, sentimental and historic value but, other than minor use out of curiosity to compare what was used then and now, they don't really get picked up after they have been restored. I suppose that some would say that's a shame, they were made to be used etc, but my professional tools (ie. the ones I use for work) simply work better.

In any case, fwiw I can't see an £8000 Norris, nor a £700 Stanley for that matter, seeing much beyond the inside of a display case, which is fair enough.
