Thank you for wasting your time so we don't have to!

I think the lesson applies to all those other mis-described lots - the 'plough planes' that are really sash fillisters, the beechwood planes listed as oak... there's a lot of people out there with only a little knowledge, trying to flog stuff. Sometimes we can benefit from our superior expertise but sometimes it's best to shrug and move on.

I was watching that, out of general interest, and was amazed at how little it went for. I should have put a bid in, but never expected it to sell for so little!

I bet the owner was half Finnish and had just happened to smash his number 4 when adjusting it with a sledgehammer. Break it in half at the mouth and weld it back together and break it off again and weld it back together again. ...I am just so sick and tired of the vandalism on most of the old tools I find here in Finland.........

I think you're right, the last owner must have been half Finnish (hammer) , as tote is all smashed, and the frog looks like this...

I've marked out a nicer shape for the ends...

...and so far only got around to filing three of the four corners...

It's going to be my Stanley No.4¾ :shock: And why not? Stanley marketed a No.4½ and a No.5¼, so why not a No.4¾ :mrgreen:
